those of you living in West Islip...
DH and i are house hunting and West Islip is the town we are looking at right now.
Any Pros and Cons about the area? Which schools are better? Where in W. Islip is a more family friendly spot (younger families w/little kids) etc..
TIA

Re: those of you living in West Islip...
I grew up in WI and currently live there.
School district wise you really can't go wrong with any of the elementary schools and the middle schools are divided by location, meaning one end of town goes to one school and the other end of town goes to the other. There's only one high school.
The difference between town is this - south of montauk hwy is very pricey - thing 700K to upwards of over a million for houses. They're right on the water or nearby.
The houses north of montauk and north of union blvd and all the way north of sunrise go for less. The only "less desirable" area I'd say is the part that borders on Bay Shore and Brentwood at the really northern part of town.
If you have any other questions, feel free to FM me.

Re: those of you living in West Islip...
We just moved into West Islip about 3 years go. We are about 2 blocks north of union.
Well when we looked at our house we must have been here about 10 times...not once during that time did we hear the train until we moved in..Its not bad but we were not prepared. There were many nights we were up because of the damn train whistle and they blow all night.
Another thing is the traffic because of the train. Udall backs up a lot during the day because of the trains going by.
My block is a cut through between Udall and Orinoco. This makes our block busy and the kids cant really ride their bikes in the street, since we do not have side walks. This is the downside to my block.
Since we moved in there have been about 3 other families that have moved in. Everyone is young and seem very friendly. Since the street is busy it makes socializing a little more complicated but we make sure we always greet everyone...
I hope this helps...I know it is only my opinions but this is something I wish I would have thought of before buying my home.

I also grew up in West Islip. I agree with what the other posters wrote.
I grew up South of Sunrise, off of Higbie and liked that area.

I grew up in WI -- loved it....school district is wonderful, low crime, nice neighborhoods. I lived off Higbie Lane in the "presidential section"....

Re: those of you living in West Islip...
I grew up in West Islip, it's a great town to live in my parents have the same friends they've had since we were kids...even though they've since moved out to a different town, I don't know that much about the schools b/c I went to private but from what I've heard ther are very good! I do agree that the more "south" you go the better, but that's like the same for every town along the south shore....

We lived in West Islip for 6 years, before moving to the North Shore last year. I loved it. Safe, affordable, close to beach and excellent schools. I would go back in a heart beat if I could.
