Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

What do you consider a "good sized" or even "big" house on Long Island these days? I was having this discussion with a friend and interested that she won't be happy unless she gets about 3000 sq ft in Nassau county - to me, that's a pretty big house around these parts Chat Icon
At least in Nassau most houses that size, no matter what town you're in - you'll be $750K plus for that day, IMO.

So curious what do you consider big? Again, on LI because obviously OOS is a different ballpark!

Mark the poll according to your minimum obviously.

Clarifying def meant without basement. I know someone who has an in-line ranch. Cute home, but not big (IMO). It's about 1100 sq ft but they consider it 2200 sq ft b/c of the basement Chat Icon

Since my house is 3000s/f with a basement, I consider a "big" house as bigger than mine.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I picked the wrong option in the poll. Chat Icon I automatically assumed you were asking the sq footage of everyone's home. Chat Icon So take away a vote from 1800-2100 and add a vote to over 3300sq ft!! Chat Icon

2500-3000 seems pretty standard these days. We're between 1800-2000 sq ft not including basement (DH says it's 2000, but for some reason I thought it was closer to 1800) and I think it's way too small, especially with 3 children and 2 large dogs. I'd love to have a home that's at least 4000 sq ft (we entertain a lot and often have over night guests, so it's my dream to have several bedrooms with their own bathroom. Chat Icon )

On long island, I say 1800-2k is a good sized/big house.

Re: Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

Over 2500 I consider big. My new house is about 2200. It's not small but I don't consider it big, it's a nice size. My old house was about 1600.

My old house was 1500 sq feet, it def felt small, some of that had to do with the layout. I would say 3,000 sq ft would be big. My new house is 4,000 sq feet and it is very spacious (more than I ever dreamed of having), I have a big family so we are quite compfortable - plenty of room to grow.

My house is 2800 and I dont think its that big and theres 2 of us. I think anything over 3500 is BIG.

Mind you, I grew up in a ranch that was probably 1500 sq feet if that. My bedroom as a child was like a closet!

Re: Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

According to mynassauproperty our house is listed at 2072 sq ft.

I don't know if it includes the basement or not but I consider our house big.

Square footage on public records and the like is always of living space that is above grade (so it doesn't include the basement).

I think anything over 2000 sq feet for the area I work in is "good sized" or on the larger side. I do most of my work in south shore nassau and central nassau, and the average homes in the area are probably 1400-1900 square feet. I am thinking of older homes (1950s-1970s) for that average. Newer construction is bigger. Older homes (1920s and 1930s) in the area tend to have smaller rooms and be smaller overall.

Brand new construction in my area is typically 2500 to 3000 square feet.

Re: Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

In Nassau, anything over 2500 sq ft is BIG.

I don't agree that 2000-3000 sq ft is standard at all. That's on the bigger size.

Re: Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

our 3 BR co-op is 1100 sq feet. I could use one more room or 250-400 more sq feet and we would be totally good.

I also voted wrong....read it as sq ft of my home. My home is about 2200 but I def dont consider that large.

Re: Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

Ours is just over 3000 sq feet including our basement.
Our house is big and even without the basement we would be comfy. So I vote 2500.

Right, I know people use their basement for living space, but I would never consider it part of the square footage - but it's def. nice to have the space!

Re: Out of curiousity (sq ft of house)

Some houses look deceving and are a lot more or less square footage than you would guess. I think that a lot depends on layout also. I know people who have a lot more square footage than we do but I would feel like I have nowhere to do anything b/c of the layout. I don't think there is really a standard on Long Island because we have every size house imaginable here! I think my house is about 1800 not including garage and basement but I'm not sure if I am remembering correctly. It is great for 3 of us and a dog but I can't speak for larger families.

Same.

A good size to me is 2400,
BIG Is over 3K

Mine is about 1800 and its too small for us with 2 kids, we need about 300-500 extra square feet.

ITA with this, layout is really important to take into consideration. I know somebody with a lot of sq footage but its broken up nto small rooms and doesnt flow well, makes it feel small.

ITA. My house is almost 2200 SF, but the layout (with a winding staircase that takes up sooo much room) makes it feel much smaller. Chat Icon
