Beware of Sprouts.
An important read, especially if you're into eating healthy. There are even older articles with the same warnings.

Re: Beware of Sprouts.
They say even home grown ones can carry the disease. They believe that it's in the seeds. Cooking them is the only real precaution you can take.

Re: Beware of Sprouts.
TY for this!! I just sent this to my husband who is a sprout lover (who oddly enough has been having a hard time finding them at like trader joes lately) I always told him these tasted like the dirt they were grown from and that I did'nt like them!!!!
He was shocked and said "ok, I'm going to stop eating them NOW!"

Re: Beware of Sprouts.
I wonder how this applies to sprouts in fried rice or lo mein? I wonder at what point are they added? Are they then cooked enough?

I believe it depends on the type of bacteria on the sprout. For example, in Germany the bacteria was EHEC, which is a strong form. Before they knew it was the sprouts that were causing all the problems, we were told to cook everything for at least 10 minutes. The warnings were for tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. Now, we are told the same about sprouts.
I don't think they have found enough evidence to say the sprouts are causing it, but the leads are very strong. Most of the people who have gotten sick have been in Northern Germany or they have been in that area.
I do believe that it was caused by some farming practice. Testing hasn't finished for that, so it will be interesting to see what the results are.
But to answer your question, I was told at least 10 minutes. Usually sprouts in Chinese food are thrown in last minute.

Re: Beware of Sprouts.
There have been similar outbreaks in recent years, in Canada in 2005 and here in 2008/9, with the same warnings.
Just use caution.
