Cesspool Safety?

I never had a cesspool growing up, and the home DH and I are buying has one. The recent tragedy of the two teenagers falling into the cesspool scares the cr*pola out of me!!

What can I do to keep our (future) children, nieces/nephews, friends, etc. safe?? Are cesspools that dangerous??

Re: Cesspool Safety?

if you know where it is located in your yard and you keep the cover on!! The problem was they took the cover off not realizing how deep it was.

Re: Cesspool Safety?

I am new to this cesspool t hing also. Best way to keep safe is stay off of them, no playing in that area IMO.

I am trying to figure out where mine are. I know they are in the front (previous owner told us and drainage pipe leads that way). But not 100% sure exactly.

Right now, my cesspool cover is at ground level. Lots of times, they are only a few inches below the surface.

The tank is buried deep, but the access tube is near the surface, to make it easy to access for maintenance.

It was above ground.
And from what I understand (from news reports), they didn't know it was a cesspool cover. They didn't know what it was. Just want to use if for the base of a fire they were going to build.

Re: Cesspool Safety?

I have 2 little girls. Last March our cesspool collapsed right under our paver walkway in the front yard. The cesspool company that came to give us an estimate to have it replaced, immediately taped off the area so that no one was injured - people in our home, the UPS guy, etc.... It seriously looked like an accident scene. It was horrible, but thankfully no one was hurt.

We filled that cesspool in and put in a new septic tank.

I never knew they did that. I thought they were always buried.

Is this in your back yard?

Re: Cesspool Safety?

If you have an older cinderblock cesspool they deteriorate over time and need to be replaced. A lot of the cesspool collapses are due to units taht are 25+ years old and they cave in. They used to make them from stacked cinderblocks. Now they replace them with cast concrete rings which are much safer - not prone to collapse. If you want to know how old yours is assume it was installed when the house was built unless you know from previous owners that it was replaced in the not too distant past. If you have it pumped they can tell if it's cinderblock or cast concrete.

If your house was built in 1965 or older you can pretty much guarantee that you have a cinderblock cesspool. They can collapse...

If your house was built in 1967 or newer then you can pretty much guarantee that you have a poured concrete cesspool and no real cause for concern...

Homes built in 1966 might have either poured concrete or cinderblock.

My home was built in 1966...We have created a berm over our cesspool specifically for this reason. To keep the kids away from the area surrounding the cesspool.....

You can not tell by pumping the cesspool whether or not it's cast of cinderblock. If a company tells you it's one or the other they are going off when your home was built not b/c they know what the cesspool is....

This is what happened to us. We had the cesspool drained and the guy that did it showed me how the whole thing was collapsing and we were lucky no one every fell throughChat Icon We had it filled and got a new one put in immediately.
