Korean food...

I'm ashamed to admit that I basically live in the Korean epicenter of the United States, yet have never had Korean food!

Are any of you familiar with Korean food and if so, could you give me an idea of what dishes you recommend? There are absolutely TONS of Korean restaurants around here, but I guess I've always been worried to look like a jerk while ordering! I honestly don't even know where to start...

Thanks!

Re: Korean food...

My co-workers have Korean food often since we are currently working in a Korean area. They highly recommend Korean BBQ restaurant. They cooked their foods (mostly meats) themselves. They said it was really good.

OMG I love Korean food...I love it. My favorite dish is usually Bibimbap, its like rice in a stone dish with lots of garnish on the top, and its topped with a raw egg yolk, which you stir in like a sauce

I also love Bulgogi, which is like a marniated bbq beef short rib, what else...I love when you get lots of little dishes of starters, salads, cuttlefish, kimchee (who can forget kimchee) pickled veg...freaking love it.

Thanks for posting this, it reminded me that I saw a new Korean restaurant here in Manchester city centre...now to get someone to watch the kids so the husband and I can go out for the evening....

mmmmmmmm Bibambop

Re: Korean food...

I love Bulgogi and Kalbi (sorry if I am spelling those wrong), which are essentially marinated meats. They are very sweet, sliced thinly.

I love the bibimbap, and I always get the "dol sot" kind, it comes in a sizzling hot stone bowl with a long spoon. You are supposed to mix it all together before you eat it. The waiter will bring you some gochujang (hot sauce)- but it isn't very spicy.

Kalbi is marinated short ribs, bulgogi is marinated beef, sliced very thin. There's a stove in the middle of the table you can cook it on. Chat Icon

When you sit down, the waiter will bring out banchan, a selection of little dishes that are complimentary. The amount and variety of dishes varies from restaurant to restaurant. But most of the time, you'll be given kimchi, bean sprouts in sesame oil, tofu with soy sauce. I can't always identify what's on those plates.

I also like pajeon, a green onion pancake. There are other types too- kimchi and seafood also appear in pancake form.

Don't know any on LI, but our favorite in NYC is Kori.

We get Dol Sot Bi Bim Bop and these delicious glass noodles with asparagus. We also get scallion pancakes.

Re: Korean food...

I'm 1/2 Korean and my family's favorite Korean restaurant by far is Kum Kang San on Northern Blvd. in Flushing (between Brower and Main St.)

They have great BBQ there, either the Bulgogi or Kalbi. They grill the beef right at the table and you get a bunch of small side dishes (for free), lettuce (to make lettuce wraps), and white rice.

I also really like bibimbap as a pp mentioned, and mandoo gook (a rice cake dumpling soup).

If you can go during the week, they have awesome lunch specials similar to bento boxes.
