I need your wisdom!!!!

... Candy making, favor making wisdom that is.

I am probably making chocolate covered Oreos for my sister's baby shower. I know basically how to do this, but have some questions for the candy gurus on the board.

1- What is the best chocolate to use? Some recipes say chocolate chips, some say the stuff you buy in the chocolate store. I've heard the Wilton stuff is icky. Any suggestions?

2- What is the best way to melt the chocolate? Microwave or double boiler?

3- How much chocolate should I get? I will need to make 2 packages of Oreos.

TIA!!!!!!!!!

I love Ghiradelli, and believe it is the best for candy making.

I get the big bag at Sam's Club.

I also don't like the microwave. I do it directly in a pot, or in a double boiler. That works well.

The amount of chocolate depends on how many oreos you are covering, but you are going to need a lot. I'd start with at least 2 cups.

ITA! I used to use Wilton chocolates exclusively, but now Ghirardelli is my new fave. And I always use a doulbe boiler- it's a lot easier than it looks/sounds. I think you might even need 3 cups, but that really depends on how thick you want the chocolate covering. Are you just dunking them or using one of the trays? The trays use more chocolate but they're cool because a lot of them have designs on them. We used them for my candy buffet at our wedding- they were little brides and grooms! HTH!

Oh yeah- and I highly recommend using Double Stuf Oreos for the dipping! Chat Icon
