Re: Cysts/PCOS
I've had cysts my whole life when I wasn't on the pill and was never diagnosed with PCOS.
I only got my period 2 or 3 times before I was 18 years old. When I went to the GYN for the first time before going to college, they did a sono and found the cysts. He put me on the pill to get rid of them. I was on the pill for 11 years. During that time, I was checked a few times to follow-up on the cysts and they did go away. It was kinda a "chicken and egg" problem, I was told -- the cysts happened because I wasn't getting my period and I was getting cysts because I wasn't getting my period.
After I went off the pill in February 08, I didn't get my period. On day 89, my GYN prescribed provera to kick-start my period. It worked and I got my period. The cycle after that was 85 days long, but it did come on its own.
Following that, I never had a regular cycle. I kept track of how many days it was, but we were not TTC so it was just for me to try to see a pattern. After about a year, I noticed that my periods were basically coming at either 59 days or 34 days, mostly alternating every other month. I did have some times when I was feeling excruciating pain when we BD in one spot, and as it turns out, I was feeling a cyst that had grown. When I lived in NY, my GYN sent me for a sono to see, and it was indeed a cyst. My period did finally come on its own, and the cyst did go away (we did another sono to confirm a few months later and it wasn't there).
When I moved out of NY, I had the pain again and my GP sent me for a sono. Same thing... had a cyst, and within a few months, it was gone.
We started TTC in January 2010. Basically, we just BD without any protection. I wasn't charting or anything else.
My last cycle in 09 was 34 days... same in Jan and Feb of '10 and I thought "FINALLY!!!"... then early April '10, around CD37, I noticed a lump in my breast. I didn't get my period yet and went to my GP about everything. Blood test on CD42 was negative -- I was not pregnant. She checked the lump and said that since it was painful, she did not thing it was anything to be worried about but we noted the location and size and she had me come back in a month later to follow up. She told me that she thought the cyst in my breast would go away when I got my period again.
May 10, 2010 (day after Mother's day) I got my BFP. It was CD62 (same cycle from when I'd gotten the BFN and neg BT). I was already 6 weeks pregnant but hadn't known. My OB estimated that I conceived around CD46 or 47. My EDD was based entirely on the measurement of the baby at my 8 week appointment and my DD was born exactly 1 day early (so, pretty dead-on!).
I still haven't gotten AF since DD was born and have my annual appointment tomorrow so I'm going to find out what we can do and whether cysts are growing again.
But I was never diagnosed with PCOS and always told I don't have it. I still was able to get pregnant on my own, and pretty quickly, too. I did have many cysts when I was younger, but in recent years since going off the pill it appears it was only about 1 at a time (albeit painful).
HTH. Sorry it's so long. Every story is different, of course, but that's mine. I was not able to BF because I didn't get a milk supply, which I was told was a hormonal problem and may have been related to all this other stuff. I was kicking myself, devastated over not being able to breastfeed when my dad gently reminded me what a blessing and miracle it was that we had our beautiful daughter. Put it all in perspective, and I started giving her formula and enjoying her and life has been amazing ever since. But that's a completely different story.
Wishing you the best! Feel free to FM if you want to talk.

Re: Cysts/PCOS
Thanks for the Story SpringSandra!
I have had cyst all my life! I was diganosed at 16! I was put on BC pills which always kept them away. I hated the way the BC pills made me feels plus it made me gain weight. Most of my teen years I was always Irregular and had to be put on BC pills to regulate my periods. Fast forward to now. They have been coming ontime but Inthe last 2 cycles they have been late by a week, Can be frustrating since DH and I are TTC. I have had some pain which I believe may be an Ovarain cyst. I'm getting this checked out.
If you do have PCOS and Cyst I know there are things that can be done to help you have a baby. I'm preparing as I think I may have both. I'll know more after my drs appointment!
Don't worry things will work out!!

Re: Cysts/PCOS
after going off BC, my periods were so irregular. I was having cycles that were like 60+ days. I also gained a lot of weight rapidly and had a few other classic symptoms of PCOS.
I went to my OB and he did a sono where he found both ovaries covered in cysts. He said it definitely looks like PCOS.
I started seeing the RE who did a ton of bloodwork. My results came back normal which was odd since I had so many classic signs of PCOS. The RE said that it can happen where it is hard to detect in your bloodwork, but he still considered me to have PCOS and treated me as though I have it.. I was not ovulating on my own either so I continued with him for fertility meds and got my BFP!
