"keeping the pregnancy" - medicine question
I have been wondering this and thought maybe you ladies would know....
Why do ladies on IVF (or at least me) need to take prometrium, estrace, and progesterone oil after transfer?
What does it do? Does it help "hold" the preganancy?
Also - why don't ladies who do IUI take them?
Just curious... it's been on my mind

I use endometrin and have never done IVF. I have only done IUI. Yes, technically it is to help you "Hold on to" the baby. If you don't produce enough progesterone on your own, then it needs to be supplemented or else that "could" be a cause for miscarriage.

they prescribe progesterone (PIO, endometrim, etc.) post IVF transfer because your body doesn't make it on its own when you do an egg retrieval. there's no traditional corpus luteum to produce it since the follicles were aspirated instead of breaking down on their own like when you ovulate naturally.

Re: "keeping the pregnancy" - medicine question
for myself and many PCOS IVFers we had to do a lot of those meds (PIO, vivelle, e2v) because we triggered with lupron. when you have lots of follies a lupron trigger reduces the chance of OHSS post ER. the way it does this though is by killing the corpus luteum and killing all of the ovarian hormonal production (progesterone and estrogen). so its important to supplement these for several weeks. if pregnant, around 10-12 weeks the placenta will take over the hormone production and the meds can be stopped. those hormones are vital for proper implantation and nurturing of embies so its important to supplement what can no longer be produced on its own.
