RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

Why did you choose to see an RE over your regular gynocologist? Did you doctor refer you to the RE?

Re: RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

Normally people start seeing an RE if they think they have a problem or issue that is preventing their BFP.
Or if they have been trying for some time (generally 1 year if under 35 and 6 months over 35 I think it is).
From my experience and from what I've heard, the doctor's don't refer you to an RE.

I personally would prefer an RE to a Reg gyno any day!! From my experience an RE is much much more thorough to your questions and issues and testing you for things than a gyno would be.

I started trying TTC Nov 09 and got pregnant on the first try. it was a mc right before the 2nd tri. Then I was trying again for about 9 months... and didn't want to waste any more time. So I made an appt with an RE. It was the BEST decision I ever made. i didn't quite make it to the testing phase with him, but I did have a consult and was waiting on CD3 bloodwork. Before CD3 came along I got pregnant on my own... but one HUGE benefit to seeing an RE while pregnant is that you usually get early Beta tests and then WEEKLY sono's starting at around 6w up until you graduate.. which is usually about 10w. This really helped me get through the first trimester, considering my past.

I guess its the same with any general practitioner versus specialist. I wouldnt go to a GP if I had a broken arm, I'd go to an orthopedist. A GP (or gyn in your case) can treat you but thats not their specialty. They dont have all the up to the minute studies regarding your diagnosis and equipment/capacity to treat it.

Check with your insurance. I didn't realize until a few months into treatment at my OBGYN that if I went to an RE all treatment was FREEEE, as in free- no copays whatsoever. It made sense to get specialized care at no cost to us! The only thing is now that I am preg, there is a $20 copay at the RE whereas I believe when I go back to the OBGYN it will be free because its considered prenatal care.

Re: RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

So how does RE work compared to gynocologist?? I want my gynocologist to deliver my baby when I get pregnant. So... do I TTC while seeing my RE and then once I am pregnant I see both RE and reg. and then reg. delivers??

you see your RE until you get pregnant and then you "graduate" onto your OBGYN after about 12 weeks.

Re: RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

i saw an RE after 6 months off BCP with only one ovulatory cycle. it was pretty obvious that i had an issue and my ob/gyn really didn't care much. she gave me clomid, told me when to BD and didnt even tell me when to come back. the women on these boards convinced me that was not a good idea and i should see an RE. a week later i had an appointment with dr. B and not only was it the best decision i ever made but i never went back to that ob/gyn ever again. it took almost a year after that, many medicated cycles, two losses, and IVF, but im now 29w pregnant.

if you dont have any issues TTC, ovulating, or miscarrying, theres no real reason to see an RE. that being said, an RE's job is to get you pregnant. they are much more involved in the process than an ob/gyn. i hate hearing my friends stories about their ob/gyn and the nonsense that they are told about things like ovulation, progesterone, TTC, and even miscarriage and chemical pregnancies. ob/gyn may be in the business of DELIVERING babies, but they def are not the most up-to-date on treating people who have issues getting or staying pregnant in the first place. that is really what an RE is for.

Re: RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

after months of irregular periods, I was told by my gyn that I had PCOS and was not ovulating on my own. I made an appointment with the RE right away. The RE specializes in these problems and monitors you closely. I got pregnant with twins my first medicated cycle! I am now 10wks and just started seeing the regular OB.

Re: RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

I went for a consult and started testing after trying for nine months unsuccessfully. My insurance doesn't cover any of it unfortunately. If my OBGY could of done the testing instead of basically sending me on my way and dismissing my concerns, I would have stayed there. We tried on our own for 11 months and this is our first month (month 12) of doing a medicated cycle.

Re: RE vs Reg. Gynocologist

You see a RE when you are having issues getting pregnant.

I had a blocked tubled surgically cleared and TTC for 3 months. Then my gyn put me on meds. My ins wouldn't cover it unless I was treated by a RE so I move on to an RE. It's much more specialized care. I couldn't imagine seeing my gyn for If treatments. They are too busy there with regular patients and pregnant patients. I like my gyn and will go back once pregnant and released from the RE though.
