Re: When was the first time you took DC out in public?
I'd ask the pediatrician what they want and see how you feel about it.
I didn't take DD out until she was 2 months old, but that was the height of flu season and the ped said not to. But it's not flu season anymore, so I don't think that would be a concern.
We just took DD on her first long trip -- 1.5 hours to the ILs and we stayed overnight -- and she's 3 months old now. She did great, but we had to time it around her meals still.
A NB is still eating every 2-3 hours (if not more often) at 1 month old. So you'd be really tied to the baby. It won't be much of a social event for you. But you know this now.
As far as getting a cold, it's definitely possible, but you can just make sure everyone knows to wash hands if they touch the baby or just tell them not to touch him. SIL brought her two children (who are day care kids and ALWAYS sick) to see DD at 6 weeks, and we just had them wash their hands TONS and use purell a lot (which they love anyway) and DD was fine.
So it's up to you, your ped, and your comfort level. Do you want to go? If you don't, don't go. If you do, you can make it work IMO.
