Did anyone not do any testing?

I mean the ultrascreen or nuchal translucency?

We are definitley not going to do amnio or CVS because we would not take any measures if there was a positive on either of those tests so now I'm wondering if I should even bother with these tests. Both of my Drs. seem to be kind of implying that I don't (but are not actually saying it).

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

My first pregnancy I declined every test.

I had a sono to confirm I was pregnant, the standard blood work at the beginning, a level II, glucose screening and the Strep B culture at the end.

I did the same but with my second pregnancy. With my first, I did all of the tests and realized that it wouldn't matter anyway if anything came back questionable, so this time around, I chose not to have those types of tests.

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

I had all required tests with DD. Just a bit of my 2 cents...a friend of mine's sister declined testing and turns out her son was born with down's (she is 31 years old) Now, had she known prior to, she would have been prepared for this. Again, totally JMO....but I think testing is a good thing. It can prepare you for what's to come.

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

See my post. I'm not having the NT and the doctor kind of hinted not to do the blood test for the quad screening.

I understand what you are saying, but we are definitely not doing amnio or CVS testing and they are the only thing that will confirm downs. The other screening tests are only an indicator and not definitive.

If you are not doing the amnio, then I would deny both test, hands down 100%. I didn't even know I had a choice....I basically just go there and throw my legs in stirups and let them have their way with meChat Icon

These tests do NOTHING but stress you OUT. I wish I never took my NT. If God forbid something WAS wrong, it would just give me 7 more months to worry about it. In my opinion, nothing can prepare you for something like that. Besides these tests are FAR from accurate so the chance of something coming back off could just worry you for no reason.

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. I have enough to worry about, keep me in THE DARK PLEASE!

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

What if the tests are able to detect a medical issue that needs to be addressed upon birth? One LI Families poster (I will FM her and ask her if whe would like to reach out to you. She is very private) was alerted to an issue at a screening. As a result, the Drs were prepared with the life saving and necessary medical attention upon the child's birth.

There is no right or wrong here. As with most things concerning pregnancy, you do what is right for your family and your situation.

For me personally, I would do a diagnostic test so I could deal with my emotions BEFORE the baby is born rather than in that moment. Some people may not need that coping/preparation time, I know I would.

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

Did them all with DD...and after the Ultrascreen, I was so upset, because the bloodwork results came back with high odds, that I vowed never to do it again.

Well, after having some scary spotting in the beginning, i'm going to take every opportunity to see Chat Icon I can...so I am going for the ultrascreen.

But I did make it clear to my OB, that I will NOT do an amnio, regardless, and he's fine with that...

My Dr. advised that any problems with the organs or anything that may require an operation at birth can be diagnosed with a sono.

Same here. I was an IVF twin Mommy and the false negatives after a very scary history were just not worth the stress. My Dr's were fine with it and my babies ae perfect in every way!

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

Thank you for posting this. I'm thinking I'm going to say no. I know we'll see baby anyway, I seem him/her every month. And I'm worried enough. I just send out an email to all my girlfriends who have children to get their take. I'll update if anyone sways my mind much one way or the other.

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

Thank you for posting this. We were just faced with this question yesterday, and hearing everyones responses was very enlightening. We have not had a moment to talk about it, but I think my answer is no to testing. I have a friend who has a child with downs I should ask her if she tested, or if she wished she did.

Thank goodness I'll still get to see Chat Icon Chat Icon often between the ob and the MFM.

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

Fwiw, I'm also the kind of person who needs to know as much as possible. Not doing the testing would make ME worry more not less - I'd rather know one way or the other. We didn't do an amnio because there is risk involved and my need to know doesn't trump potential risk to the baby (especially given my age and test results) but if there similar test with no risk we probably would have done it. It's the same reason we found out the gender, and the same reason i took a million internet cheapies after getting my BFP. I am a planner by nature with history of anxiety. I took comfort from knowing. (and I don't get monthly sonos)

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

This is my first and DH and I decided we would never do the Amnio or CVS b/c the results wouldn't change anything for us, however I did the other tests b/c I never really thought to deny them.

However, with my next one, I will seriously consider denying these tests b/c I do feel they cause us all to worry for (usually) nothing.

I always say it must have been soo much easier being pregnant when our parents had us before all of this high tech testing...the more you look, the more your chance of finding some abnormality that is most likely nothing...KWIM?

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

We knew that we wouldn't do the amnio or CVS so we figured there wasn't really any point in doing the ultrascreen at 12 weeks or any other similar testing. I think it's a personal choice some people might want to be prepared but I didn't want to have something else to be stressing about if the results came back elevated, etc. I am a special education teacher and work with mostly autistic children. I just felt like there are so many other conditions, disabilites that we can't find out about and that could occur later in the child's life so I personally choose to just take the wait and see approach but I know that others would prefer to be prepared.

Re: Did anyone not do any testing?

What about if DC has something wrong with them that needs to immediately be taken care of at birth? Idk maybe heart issue for example for me Id want to know so that we are prepared for any complications that may occir at birth or to have surgery scheduled if necessary.
