breast pumps

Do you have any preference for the breast pump you used/are using? It seems that the Pump n' Go is the most versatile. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Re: breast pumps

I'm struggling with which one to buy as well. I'm going to wait until after the baby is born though. I won't be pumping at work so I don't think I need the big PIS with the traveling kit, but I'd like something powerful for storing my milk. Not one of those little hand pumps.

Re: breast pumps

Honestly, if you are really going to be pumping a lot, it's worth it to rent a hospital grade one rather than buy one. I rent a hospital grade pump and I could never use anything else.

I would agree with Rachel, rent a hospital pump in the beginning if you need to pump. I have been pumping for 6.5 months and still use a hospital pump. My supply is still going really strong.

Re: breast pumps

I didn't buy one before birth - I thought I would rent one at the hospital if I needed to, but I didn't. When I got home I used a hand pump at first (when needed) and I eventually got the Medela PIS Advanced. I was VERY happy with it

You can rent them from medical supply stores or some pharmacies.

Re: breast pumps

Call your insurance company and find out if they will cover your pump rental.
Some will, some won't and some will only do it if your baby is born early or with certain problems.
You should have a lacation consultant help you if you are pumping for low supply or latching issues. If you just want to pump because you are going to work you should get either a Pump in Style or an Ameda Truly Yours- they are made by almost the same company (brothers own them)
You shouldn't start to pump, unless there is a medical reason, for 4-6 weeks.

Re: breast pumps

I have been pumping exclusively since day 2. I use a hospital grade pump (Medela Classic) and it is GREAT!! It is not convenient for going back to work or for being on a long trip in the car, but I am not sorry that I chose to rent instead of buying one. I bought a hand pump for when I am not near anyplace convenient for pumping and I have only used it when I was driving to North Carolina.

I thought I could get the pump from the hospital when I was discharged but they don't do that. The lactation nurse who came to see me in the hospital gave me some recommendations for where I could go to rent a pump.

Where are you located? I can give you the name of the lactation consultant I rent mine from. She is in Smithtown/Commack.

You can call "1-800-Tell You" and type in your zip code and they will give you the 3 nearest places to rent a breast pump.

I'm in that area too. If you don't mind, send me the information.

Re: breast pumps

What would you recommend for occasional pumping for storing milk & DH giving bottles occassionally? Still the hospital grade or PIS?
