How Long Did You Wait?
DH and I are at the stage where we are thinking of TTC soon. i am thinking it might be a good idea to go off birth control for a little while before we start trying to regulate again. Have you done this? And if so, how long did you wait between the time you went off BC to the time you started TTC?

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
I was planning to go off a year before not because thats what my doctor said to do, but because thats what I wanted to do. It actually ended up being more like 10 months because - 1. My BCP starting making me sick and 2. we starte TTC earlier then we originally planned.

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
Well, they say to give your body three months to regulate before TTC. During those 3 months you should also start taking a prenatal vitamin. However, there are many girls who go off the pill and their bodies regulate right away and some even get pregnant the first month. I was fortunate to be one of those girls whose bodies regulate fast. Ive been on the pill for 4 years and the first month off my body went back to my reg. cycles. Ive been off the pill for about 8mths now and every month AF has arrived as scheduled.

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
Only waited 1cycle then got PG but ended in mc at 6 weeks. Looking back I think I should've given my body the 3 months my dr suggested for my body to regulate.

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
We meant to start trying right away but I wasn't ovulating.. so although I was peeing on OPKs, we didn't actually have opportunities to conceive until I started seeing an RE.

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
I started taking a multivitamin with folic acid about 6-8 months before and switched to prenatals about 2 months before going off the pill. we originally thought we would wait a few months to let my cycles regulate but decided to "wing it" and just see what happens and I got pregnant first cycle off the pill. I never regulated though, it was a 2 month long cycle!

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
I've heard to wait 3 months after coming off BC. I've also heard that you're more fertile right after coming off BC so I really have no idea what the right answer is. In my case, I did wait 3 months but only because DH was nervous that the baby would come around tax season

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
i didn't wait and i got pregnant as soon as i stopped bcps and i had a miscarriage....i have no idea if that could have been a factor in my pregnancy loss, research on google says not likely but my doctor said its a possibility (along with tons of other possibilities )....there are girls on here who got pregnant right away and were fine and others like me who miscarried so who knows...but next time around i'll wait the 3 months after stopping the pill to be on the safe side...
i was taking my prenatals for awhile though even while i was still on the pill....i think taking them for a month before is good but others don't start until they are pregnant and there are other who are on them for months before getting pregnant...they can't hurt though so i say the sooner you start those the better...

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
From everything I have read an understand, the only reason to wait 3 months or so after going off BC to start TTC, is so that you can see what your cycles will be like. Most often, cycles are a little wacky for about 2-3 months after coming off. The first time we were TTC, we started right after I came off, and got PG 6 months later and now have a beautiful DC. This time, we again started right away (didn't want to worry about timing or tracking cycles or ovulation or anything. The less stress the better for TTC!), and got PG the first month off BCP. I'm now almost 7 weeks.

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
I started taking Folic Acid in May '10, went off BCP & started taking Pre natals in Sept'10. My cycle regulated its self right away. We were going to start TTC in Jan but I put it off till now b/c I wanted to lose some weight I had gained. I knew to give my body time to regulate so thats why I went off in Sept to try in Jan.

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
We are planning to start TTC in 3 more months.... my dr advised me in november to begin taking a daily multivitamin with folic acid then and to just stop taking the pill when we are ready. You are very fertile when you first come off the pill (he told me) so I am hoping maybe this way it may happen quick if we don't wait, but i guess you just never know!! He also said the only reason people say wait is so that you can become familiar with your cycle.... the BCP drugs wipe out of your system as soon as you stop taking it pretty much, so there is no reason to stop for any other reason!!! HTH!

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
I've been off BC since September. OUr original plan was to start in the fall but we actually started trying this month. I wanted to be off BC at least 6 months to a year before we started trying. I was on the pill for about 15 years (with a few breaks here and there) and I wanted to give my body a chance to regulate from that.
HTH and good luck to you!

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
Once you come off BCP it takes 3 months! I haven't been on the pills in a long time. But I know it takes that long to take effect.
Good Luck!!!! Baby Dust! Baby Dust!!!

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
my plan was to get off about 6 months before starting to ttc. but after getting off them, i didnt get AF for 3 months. so I found out I have pcos. I will go right into TTC with fertility treatment. the 1st RE said that im better off remaining on BCP until im ready to begin TTC so I dont have to deal with the stress of irregular cycles. My second RE said its better to be on BCP and go straight into ttc, something to do with a benefit to fertility. i have no idea. this is my last month of bcp then we start in may!

Re: How Long Did You Wait?
my doctor told me there was no medical reason to wait and that people are often extra fertile right after going off the pill (didnt think I would be one of them lol)
The impression she gave me was that if you want to plan ahead, you may want to go off the pill 3 months before you want to TTC to give your body a chance to regulate and to get to know your cycles a bit. However, if you are ready to TTC and didn't wait the 3 months you are fine to start right away, as there is no medical reason to prevent for 3 months. You may be more fertile or you may have a little more trouble because of unfamiliarity with your cycles. Different doctors probably have different opinions on this.
I was expecting wacky cycles and we were just planning to wing it for a few months to let my cycles regulate, but decided not to prevent. I had a 56+ day cycle and it was really stressful for me. I did not expect to be one of the lucky ones who gets pregnant first cycle...

Why do so many people take prenatal vitamins before getting pregnant?

Why do so many people take prenatal vitamins before getting pregnant?
Folic acid is most important in the first few weeks of pregnancy and you don't know you are pregnant at the very beginning. From what I've read it's important to have it in your system, which is why a lot of organizations and doctors recommend that any woman of childbearing age take folic acid even if you aren't ttc in case of an oops. (it really lowers your risk of the baby having neural tube defects). Because of that the FDA actually has folic acid added to a lot of dried cereals, pastas, etc. Chances are you'd be fine either way but I switched to prenatals when my regular multivitamin ran out because I figured no reason not to. I didn't take dha until I found out we were pregnant because that doesn't need to be in your system as long
