Names & Baptizing

So my mil told me last night that to get a baby baptized their first or middle name has to be a saint name, is this true?

That's old school I think. My mother says the same thing. It has to be a saint's name or a derivative thereof (like Michaela is a derivative of Michael). With all the trendy names out there though, I think they waive that rule. I don't know for sure but none of my friends have had issues.

No, we use our mother's maiden names for our first born's middle name, in my large Catholic family.

Re: Names & Baptizing

We had DS baptized and no one ever even asked us what his middle name was.

No, not at all.

Ang, for Confirmation they have to choose a Saint's name or a biblical name but it's never actually used.

Our church told us you couldn't pick a name that went agaisnt Christian sensibilities. So basically you can't name your child Lucifer or anything like that. But would you really want to name your child after the devil anyway?

Re: Names & Baptizing

this could very well depend on the parish you are planning on baptizing your child at. just from my experience of selecting a church for our wedding- churches have different expectations of couples/families.
