Elliptical placement....

So...DH has been wanting an elliptical forever..of course, I would use it, too...we finally pick one and read up online that you need at least 90" of clearance at the top...we thought it would go in our basement, but due to the drop ceiling, it's a no-go...same with our den..no drop ceiling, just too low...DH suggests the living room-it's just hitting a sore point for me since I really want to have a welcoming place for company, etc. I suggested our guest room, which EVENTUALLY will be a second child's room (child one isn't here yet..LOL) and he's worried about the floor in there and basically isn't keen on it...I want us to be healthy and have this to use, but there has to be somewhere it can go..we do NOT have a small house (to me) and it's frustrating that there are only 2 places this thing can go! If you made it this far, thank you, and please..tell me I'm either being irrational about the living room or suggest!

Re: Elliptical placement....

How tall are you and DH? You need 90" for a certain height person. You might be able to get away with a lower ceiling.

I have an exercise bike in our living room.... Chat Icon

Re: Elliptical placement....

DH is 5'10 and I'm 5'8"...the elliptical, I believe, is 68" high...I do have furniture in the living room now, and as I said, when we have events in there, I really don't think I want the elliptical to be the eyesore..LOL...I wish I could put it in our den...maybe we'll think about height and revisit if you have any insight, GoldenRod...thanks...

Have DH on the eliptical, and measure his maximum height on the machine (have him exaggerate his movements, so he won't bang his head if he is really going hard on the machine.) You could use a piece of cardboard or something to see where his head would touch, then measure that height.

You may be able to remove one drop-ceiling panel in your basement, to give you more head room. Especially if it's between the floor joists above, and there isn't anything between the joists. You could probably get an extra foot of space.

Re: Elliptical placement....

Thank you..we don't own it yet, but I wish we would have thought of that when we "visited" it in the store yesterday..maybe I can get him to do it one day during this week so we can get the ball rolling..he really wants this for his health, and that's why I'm conflicted as well..

Re: Elliptical placement....

I have an elliptical in my spare bedroom on the second floor. What is the problem with your floor in your second bedroom that your dh doesn't want it in there?
Are you afraid of the sound or that the ceiling will come crashing down you??..just curious.

I could not have that thing in my living room. While our upstairs was being gutted we kept it in the garage but it was always cold and creepy for me to be in the by myself. I was paranoid that someone was in there with me.

I would strongly suggest the second bedroom, or if you have a garage.

Re: Elliptical placement....

I am into the second bedroom..he said he was worried about the floor, but he's really thinking ahead to our second child (in a few years!!) and saying we'll have to deal with it then...the garage is out since we actually use it for cars...

Penny..sure...as long as DH has a membership to your house! LOL

well, you can always move it around in a few years. It's a pain b/c it's big and bulky but it can be done. We've moved ours 3 times already. And when my dd is ready to move upstairs we'll have to move it again. I wouldn't worry so much about a second child that isn't born yet. ; )

Re: Elliptical placement....

I agree - I'd NEVER put it in my living room !!

What about getting an inexpensive area rug to put underneath it in the spare bedroom if your DH is concerned about the floor?

Re: Elliptical placement....

we would put a mat under it no matter where it went...his issue, I think, was the integrity of the floor (kinda makes no sense to me), but I think the real reason is where it will go when we need the room

They sell mats specifically made to go under ellipticals/treadmills to protect the floor.

We live in a one bedroom, so our only option is to have the treadmill in the living room. It really, really bothered me at first, and even now it still irks me sometimes, but you do get used to it. If we had a spare room, or even if we could fit it in our own bedroom, no doubt it would go in there!

We have ours in the basement. DH is very tall and we had to remove one of the panels of the drop ceiling so that he can fit!
