Can someone give me the important details of IVF?
We plan on doing IVF with PGD. But, I am not doing anything until May/June. I wonder if anyone could tell me how it goes. I know the doctor will give me more details but I am curious now.
I know I take meds. Then I have a surgery to harvest my eggs.....how painful is that???? Do I have to go to the RE daily for monitoring? With PGD, how long until they put the embryos back?
I am praying for everyone here!

Hi,
Well..it is hard to describe IVF in general. One website that I think does a very good job of explaining the IVF process down to pictures of embryos is:
http://www.advancedfertility.com/ivf.htm
As for pain, in general, you will be put under for the egg retrieval so the retrieval itself is not painful, but you will likely feel sore and uncomfortable and bloated after the egg retrieval. The egg transfer is not painful for most and you are not put under. You generally do not go in for daily or more frequent monitoring until you start stimming and get closer to triggering. There will be other appts along the way to check for cysts and whether or not you have been properly suppressed before starting your medication.
As for genetic testing, I think that when they put the embryos back depends upon the lab and clinic. Some can put them back on Day 5 and others make you wait and do a FET.

I have done IVF with PGD. It works just like a regular IVF cycle except the day after ER a cell will will be removed from each fertilized embryo and sent to a lab for testing. At my office, those undergoing PGD always have ET on day 5. Feel free to FM with any questions

Knowledge is everything when it comes to IVF. I can only offer this advice, everyone is different as well as their experiences and their pain threshold. Its more a mental preparation than any physical thing you can go through. You will see that all the meds and procedures they give you it will be nothing compared to the overwhelming feelings you will go through. Keep an open mind, open heart and never give up hope.
Good luck, I hope your visit here is short and ends up sweet!
