Need Opinions Please!

I went to a new obgyn yesterday for my yearly exam and to talk about getting pregnant. We have been trying since July, I know not that long, but I've always had long and irregular cycles so I wanted to speak with her about getting tested for PCOS and just to see if I had an issue.

I don't think this doctor meant to upset me, but she actually laughed at me and made fun of the fact that I was concerned about TTC since it's not been a year yet and I'm only 30 years old.

She also said that all of irregularities are due to my weight and I should def drop at least 10-15 pounds before getting pregnant because I would be at a MUCH higher risk for miscarriage and other problems while pregnant.

She didn't tell me anything I don't already know but just her attitude was horrible and I sat there crying in her office, something that has NEVER happened to me before.

I guess my question is, do you think she is right? I have been overweight my whole life, I've been thinner than I am now and still have had issues with my cycle.

Should I see someone else for just a consult or go to a specialist even though I don't know if I have PCOS or something else? She said even a RE would not see me now until I lost a little weight.

Ugh so upset and frustrated. Any thoughts and opinions would be great and if anyone can recommend another doctor, I would appreciate it just in case I decide to switch.

I would definetly see another doc.

When i was trying - i had cycles of over 60 days the first two cycles off BC and was irreular before. I had only been trying for 2 months and the doc sent me for a sonogram to check my ovaries and some blood work. I did not really ask for it she went offf history - she is in MA so i can't recomend her - but you need someone who you are comfortable with

just so you know not all who have long cycles have pcos - i was never regular and have sugar problems but i did not have it

Wow, Im really sorry. First off, I do think you need to change Drs. Any Dr. that would laugh at you and make you cry is just horrible in my book. Im sure weight plays a major role in TTC but I dont know if shes correct in saying that that is the only cause of problems with conceiving. I dont know if an RE would see you at this stage, perhaps some of the other girls on this board can help with that but Im just sorry you had to go through this.

I would see another doctor. Fwiw I have always been thin and have always had irregular cycles as well (1-3 months long)

first off i am sorry she yelled at u..second if u r requesting testing for pcos and she laughed thats just crazy

and to say a re wont see u until u lost weight?? thats un heard of..im a fatty,have pcos and see a re

im sorry u dealt with that and i hope u do not have pcos but i think u should see someone who will take u serious

I would see another doc just because of her bedside manner. When you DO get pregnant, you will have lots of silly questions and concerns and you don't need someone laughing at you over them.

Do you NEED to loose weight? only you know the answer to that. Is it NECESSARY for you to get pregnant? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

I was 65 lbs over my "normal" weight when I tried for DC #2. I kept gaining for no reason. Turned out I had type 2 diabetes and didnt even know it.

Did your OB even bother to do bloodwork?!?!?


I wish you luck - please find a doctor that you are comfortable with, and someone who takes your concerns seriously

Thanks so much for all your help. I def plan on switching doctors and I think going to see a RE just to have some tests done. No my OB did not do any bloodwork, I asked but she said she wanted me to lose weight first and that at my next cycle she would like me to get some bloodwork done to see if I might be pre diabetic, but that is all she wanted to test for at this point. Ugh.

I go to Dr Lockhart in west islip and absolutely LOVE her. No question is stupid and I plan to bombard her with tons of them when I see her Mon.

I HATE that she told you that an REI wouldn't see you until you lost weight. She is BULLSH!TTING you! What an as$hole! Or maybe she's naive, whatever.
I've worked in REI for over a yr for 2 diff practices and NEVER heard nonsense like this. We don't turn ppl away. As part of a tx plan, wt loss may be one of the plans, maybe even prioir to tx. But an REI will def see you and shouldn't laugh at you like this lady. If you want to see an REI, (and ur ins will cover) then why not? Go and see one!

I would not stay with her... not for a second.

And an RE would see you! I promise!!! I was seeing and RE and I saw some very very overweight girls in the waiting room... so that's total BS.

I would switch if I were you. Whenever I get myself all worked up about this stuff, my dr. always makes me feel BETTER, not worse. Even when he points out that I may be acting a bit kooky, I never feel stupid. You want someone with good bedside manner, ESPECIALLY considering the emotions that come along with TTC and pregnancy!

Just my 2 cents.
