Re: Is this true??

Thats so not true.I think you are predisposed to certain things and if you have them, you will have them no matter what...for instance, breastfeeding is supposed to ward off things like exczema, however it just doesn't...if your parents have it and you are predisposed to have it...you will.

Doctors are crap.

Re: Is this true??

My son was EBF and he had so many ear infections he needed tubes. I think it depends on the kid.

Re: Is this true??

I have heard this but I really think it depends on more than just that. My son was strictly formula fed and never had an ear infection and he is 17 months. He has only been sick 2 times really.

My friend formula fed her first child and had him in day care and he never got ear infections and rarely got sick. Her daughter was not in day care and BF and she had several ear infections and was sick often - so go figure!

Please tell you friend not to feel guilty. I am sure she is a good mom and has done her best. I truly think some kids are more prone to these things than others.

Re: Is this true??

Wow I can't believe a Dr. said that. Jake was formula fed from day one (even though he also got BM for the first 6 weeks) and knock on wood, he's also yet to have an ear infection. Add to that the fact that I've always been very prone to ear infections.

Very wrong of that Dr to stress her out like that.

Re: Is this true??

I just want to let you know that Caiden was EBF and got ear infections at least once a month for 8 months. So that bit about formula is not true, just like when they say EBF babies hardly get sick, yeah right! Chat Icon

My son ended up with tubes when he was 16 months old. He hasn't had an infection since and he's now 2.5 yrs old!

Don't worry about what the doctor said... they don't know it all! Chat Icon

The doctor is exaggerating. He can't say for certain that he wouldn't have gotten the ear infections, but he may have been slightly less likely. Breastfed babies get fewer ear infections, but that doesn't mean none.

Re: Is this true??

The theory behind your doctor's statement is that the way the baby BFs (position of the head and the movement of the jaw) is supposed to keep the fluid moving so it doesn't settle in the ear canal and cause an infection. Of course, that's not to say BF babies won't get an ear infection. BF is just supposed to help avoid geting an infection.

That being said, he should have made his point in a different manner. You can't blame formula feeding for ear infections, and there is no guarantee that BFing will prevent them.
