I MUST Be SUCH THE Virgin Cook, Re: a meat thermometer
I am making my first Roastbeef tonight, thanks to a great recipe I found from one of you talented ladies. I bought a Farberware themometer today at Uncle Guiseppe's when I was food shopping and THOUGHT you cook the meat with the thermometer in it but when I just checked my meat to see where it was at, looking for 145 degree F all the plastic in the dial had bubbled up and wasn't working, I guess it melted. Thankfully I found another one I had at home to check the temp!
What's wrong with me?

I think it's awesome that you were smart enough to buy a meat thermometer. I didn't buy one until I'd been cooking for a few years, cutting the nearly raw roasts in 1/2 and then trying to finish them on the stove. Or shoving a nearly raw chicken, piece by piece into the microwave.
I found this to be a great investment
You can set it to alarm you when the meat meets (lol) the desired temperature. $20 at BBB, $16 with the coupon.

I have a very similar one to this. I got mine at Target. Make sure whatever you buy is oven safe to be left in the meat while it cooks.
The one you had was an instant read thermometer. It is not oven safe (as you figured out!)

Been there, done that.
Now you know for next time and then someone will tell you that they did it and you will feel so "experienced".

I've done that too. BBB was nice enough to take it back.
I use a regular stainless one and I stick it in when the meat should be about 30 mins from being done.
Then I stick it in there every 10 mins.
Remember to take the meat out before it reaches the right temp so you give it time to rest and rise to the right temp.

definitely invest in a digital one that says you can keep it in while cooking. I LOVE mine!

PLEASE learn from my mistake...I have the one that goes in the meat while you cook it - like the ones posted.
THAT METAL ROD GETS HOT WHEN ITS COOKING. DO NOT TAKE IT OUT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!!
