*updated* clomid/ovulate on your own
i'm gearing up for another CD3 appt with the RE. this was my first cycle on clomid, which i used to think was a drug for women who had trouble Oing and now i understand is used more broadly than that.
BUT
i had problems this cycle that i never had before the clomid:
* needed a trigger shot to O
* shortened my LP from 12 days to 10
* RE left me to track O with the OPK, which showed no sign through CD17 (see above) at which point my 2 best follies had blown up to 30. there were 4 others, but only one of them was close to mature at 16. when i called he said those 3 were "arguably viable" therefore i'm not sure i had ANY fertilizable eggs on clomid.
can anyone offer any experience or insight on this stuff? we'll do another IUI this cycle but i know there are many options with meds. i just want to be ready with my questions.
update: i went this morning. i just said i wasn't thrilled with the way the whole cycle unfolded and that i didn't want to futz around with OPKs anymore. he was happy to be more aggressive and trigger ovulation. set up appointments to start the process of measuring follicles until we're ready to trigger. hopefully i get lucky
thanks for all the info!!!

Re: clomid/ovulate on your own
I ovulate on my own and have very regular periods. Dh and I chose not to go the clomid route and to immediately start with inj + IUI after 1 year of trying. Even though I ovulate on my own, I still had to trigger using ovidrel during both IUI's. I believe RE's have you trigger so that everything can be perfectly timed and the follicles are just the right size. GL with your next cycle!

Re: clomid/ovulate on your own
i ovulate on my own but the dr thinks my ovulation might not be "strong" enough- whatever that means
i was put on clomid and had to trigger as pp said, to time the iui correctly (i ovulate and surge on my own normally)
i had 2 mature follies at 20 and that is when they triggered
maybe they would have grown larger if i had not triggered and waited for my actual surge to happen
who knows
im going for my 2nd iui next week so we will see

who is your RE?
RE use tirgger shot to guarantee ovulation. I am not understanding why he left you unmonitored and your follies blew up to 30mm? REs start trigger at 18 mm

Re: clomid/ovulate on your own
theres nothing wrong with using a trigger shot. i wouldnt consider that a problem. its actually a solution becuase it guarantees ovulation.
however, i completely disagree with REs that make you use OPKs. its THEIR job to track your ovulation, not YOURS!!

I agree. Ask if there are other options to monitoring instead of using OPK's.

Well I take clomid and I ovulate on my own. Luckily the clomid has not changed my cycle at all. The only difference is that I can feel when I ovulate now because I have really strong cramping that day. My RE also has me use OPKs and that has worked for me. I go in to monitor my egg size but I usually only go in once for that and then I use the OPKs and ovulate a few days later. Now they have told me if I don't get a surge within a certain amount of days, to come back in. I don't think there is anything wrong with your RE having you use OPKs if they work. JMO. It saves me from having to run to the doctor ever day. Everyones's body is different and your doctor should be monitoring you based on your situation and needs. There is no one right answer.
Now if they don't work for you (which they don't seem to be in your case) that's another story. I do agree that your doctor needs to be monitoring you a little more closely and that your follicles should not have gotten that big.

Re: clomid/ovulate on your own
i'm not opposed to using a trigger, but i NEEDED a trigger because when i called after more than a week of nothing on the OPK (freaking out that we might have missed the boat because of the stupid tests) they did bloodwork and the LH hormone looked like it was "trying" but not succeeding...whatever that means. i have never needed help Oing before, so that seemed weird to me.
i agree tho about the fact that they left me on my own and let the follies get too big rather than do the work of monitoring me and triggering when they were mature. i told them from the get-go that OPKs were hit or miss for me. i was so anxious about it the whole time besides the fact that they may have blown this cycle by being too lax.
my RE is san romain from RSofNY. this will all be part of tomorrow's convo.

Re: clomid/ovulate on your own
When I was took 100 mg Clomid cd 3-7 (for lack of O'ing on my own) I was monitored every day I told RE that OPK's are hit and miss for me. I would have Blood work done every day and a sono every other day to check the size of my follies. When my follies looked to be a 'mature' size CD14 I triggered with Ovidrel.
ETA: I saw Dr Trivax at RSofNY in Mineola.
