talk to me about ham

I've never bought one or made one. not sure what I should be looking for.

I know a raw ham you need to let soak and I can't really do that.

so, what kind of pre cooked ham do you do?

Re: talk to me about ham

I don't remember what thread it was in, but someone mentioned to get the one in the red foil. You just need to stick it in the oven to heat it up and it comes with the brown sugar glaze to pour over it.

I have never cooked a ham, but my mom does. She always buys a Krakus ham. She rubs it with brown sugar, places pineapple slices on top, puts some cloves in it and then pours the juice of the pineapple over it and bakes it. It's very good.

Spiral ham I'll never do again - there were 2 different sets of directions on the package and it came out like shoe leather - It literally flew out my front door because it was inedible.

Regular ham - shank portion I think its called (not fresh ham) - I put pineapple slices and cloves on it. Then bake according to directions. You can then use the bone for split pea soup the next day Chat Icon

Re: talk to me about ham

I've made a whole fresh ham and it came out wonderful.
I did not soak it, just sliced the skin and fat and rubbed some spices into the ham, wrapped it tightly in plastic and let it marinate overnight.
Next day, I just roasted the heck out of it, periodically draining the fat from the roasting pan because there is a lot of it.
Lots of juices too to baste the ham and to make a good pan gravy.
All in all, took about 6 hours for a 23 pound ham.

Spiral ham is easy. It's pre-cooked so all you have to do is heat it thru, wrapped tightly in foil to make sure it does not dry out. Make a glaze of mustard and brown sugar and you are all set.

Re: talk to me about ham

I've done spiral ham - you are basically re-heating it, so you just can't leave it in too long or it will dry out.

It comes with the glaze, but as others have said, you don't have to use it, or you could make your own. My family likes it - some people cut it up on their plate and some like to make sandwiches, so I serve rye bread with it. Good for leftover sandwiches and pea soup.

Not trying to be a jerk, but isn't that kinda like saying you won't put commercial relish on your hot dog?

Not trying to offend anyone with that question. I try to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives on a regular basis, and I am the one who recommended the ham on another thread!

I don't. Chat Icon it's not just about the ingredients per se. I also have a thing about things being sweeter than I'd like. as a general rule, glazes like this are.

Smithfield. I made one last year, my first time. Delish.it comes with a glaze pouch, you dont have to use it. I bought boars head sugar glaze. Delish. I found it to be the easiest thing i have ever made.

Re: talk to me about ham

I buy a spiral sliced ham, I don't use the glaze pouch that comes with it. I make my own.
Cook the ham flat side down for about 30 to 40 minutes.

In a pot:

1/2 bag light brown sugar
1/2 bottle honey
3/4 bottle real maple syrup
simmer together. Pour over ham a little at a time. Cook another 30 minutes.

It is delish. Although maybe a bit to sweet for you if you don't like it sweet!

ETA
I usually get a 8lb. ham

Re: talk to me about ham

I usually take the ham and place it in a roaster.

Put pineapple slices on top, along with a marachino cherry in the middle.

Then take some ginger ale and pour it over the top and let the ham sit in the ginger ale in the roaster.

As long as you baste (sp?) it shouldn't come out dry unless you overcook it.

I don't really like the glaze that comes with the ham. I have no problem with premade stuff, I just wasn't into it myself.

I've made this a couple of times for holidays and my whole family liked it. It's a Rachael Ray recipe:

Spiral Sliced Ham with Jezebel Sauce

* 1 spiral sliced ham, reheated to package directions
* 1 (15-ounce) can crushed pineapple
* 1 (10-ounce) jar apricot all fruit preserves
* 3 tablespoons dry mustard
* 1/2 cup prepared horseradish, from dairy aisle
* 1 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Serve with warm ham and biscuits.

Re: talk to me about ham

I make a whole fresh ham.
Cut small slits on the top, add cloves and pineapple (canned).
I make a glaze with the juice from the canned pineapple, maple syrup and brown sugar-no particular measurements I just adjust the ingredients to my liking (as far a sweetness)
I pour over the ham and cook for ~4-6 hours depending on the size. I baste it throughout the cooking process like you would a turkey.
I am not much of a chef but this always comes out tastey Chat Icon

Re: talk to me about ham

Im not a fan of spiral ham either. I've had too many dry ones. I usually get a butt or shank...put cloves and pineapple and then brown sugar glaze at the end.
