mixing meat?
I make a meatloaf with ground turkey meat and ground beef and a few other ingredients. My mom who gave me the recipe always mixed all the ingredients with her hands. I have always done that but find it incredibly painful for my hands. Yes, maybe I'm a baby, but I made DH do it the last time and he even said "how does your mom do this?".
Anyway, I'm in the market for some kind of mixer that can handle mixing ground meats (as well as batters and such). Can anyone recommend anything?

Re: mixing meat?
please don't use the kitchen aid mixer to mix ground meat - you'll end up with tough chewy meat. Unfortunately you have to treat your meat gentle in order to have a tender meatball/meatloaf.
If you can, premix all the other ingredients you are using ---- egg, garlic, parsely, etc ... before you start mixing it in. Poke holes in the ground meat, pour the mixture over. Shake the parm cheese and breadcrumbs (if you are making meatballs) over the entire surface, then lightly mix. Rachel Ray says handmix "no more than 5 times" to keep meat from getting tough. I try, but sometimes I go to 7 even 8 times..
Mixing raw meat is one of my least favorite things to do, but believe me I've had meatballs that came out tasting like rubber, YUCK!

Aint this the truth! DH (have no idea what he was thinking) mixed meat in our Kitchen Aid to make Meatloaf along w/ some other ingredients.
I cant even explain to you how freakin disgusting it was. It was soooo tough. It almost seemed processed. OMG...so GROSS.
Not only did we throw it in the garbage, but actually went outside to throw it in the garbage pail so we didnt have to EVER see it again. It was bad.......really, really BAD!

Re: mixing meat?
I make sure my hands are wet when mixing meat.
It helps get it all together without too much effort.
You could even use olive oil on your hands.

Re: mixing meat?
Lol it was just a suggestion, Ive never mixed meat in there lol I used it for baking but I figured maybe it would work. I use my hands. How about wearing gloves when you mix the meat?

Re: mixing meat?
Thanks for the suggestions... will not use an electronic mixer after reading this - you all saved my next meatloaf! I have an unusual sensitivity to cold especially in my hands/fingers. Gloves, like winter mittens maybe, might be the answer (LOL), I know you probably meant rubber but seriously, it is so darn cold! However, everyone loves it so I guess it's worth it... in some twisted way.

Re: mixing meat?
You're not alone. My hands hurt so bad mixing meat, sometimes I dont know what to do w/ myself. LOL. I try and run them under warm water but its a temporary fix. And I think also...how do people do this????
Only other suggestion I can think of is maybe put meat on counter to room temp for a half hour or so to cut down the coldness. I never tried it but I may just hAve to.

Re: mixing meat?
LMAO at that story.
You only need to do it once to know how bad it will be.
