So I've got a crochet question....

I've been crocheting along, fairly well, I think. But one thing has me wondering...

All of the books and patterns I have always give stitch instruction pics working off a starter chain and going in through a single strand "V", back loop. Kind of have no choice in the first row. But after you have a row complete and your working into the top "V" stitches of the sc, dc, what have you, I've been putting my hook under both loops of the "V". Is that right?

I've yet to do it, but I've seen patterns reference going through "back loop only" or "front loop only" which would lead me to believe that both loops would be the norm. Is it? Or am I supposed to be going through just one strand/loop of the "V"? Is it preference or actual technique?

I suppose I could stitch it out to see what happens but just never did! Chat Icon I'm wondering if that's making my work too tight... on top of my tension issues. Chat Icon

Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: So I've got a crochet question....

Yes, normally you would go through both loops for a stitch. Some patterns will call for "front loop only" or "back loop only", which gives the work a "ridged" sort of look. Sometimes if you are making petals of a flower, it will tell you to go through the back or front loop only.

Not sure what the "V" is, I havent seen that in a pattern before.

I was refering to the "V" as what the two loops form, a sideways "V" or chain if you will. I've seen it referenced that way. Maybe more in knitting than in crocheting because it's sideways I guess.

I agree with Sharon -- go through both loops after the foundation (chain) row unless the pattern specifies otherwise.

Re: So I've got a crochet question....

yes, sounds like you've been doing it right.

you go under both "legs" of the V unless the patters states to do otherwise.

sounds like you're on the right track

yay!!

Re: So I've got ANOTHER crochet question....

Well here's another question for anyone looking in.... sc3tog

Single crochet three together to make a mitered square. Again, shows doing it off a starter chain so there's no choice but to pull three single loops. Doing it off a worked row, pulling three double loops is out of the question. So I've been pulling three loops from the back. The pattern did not specify front or back loop (unless I missed it). Seems to work fine but does it matter if you go front or back on this one? Chat Icon

i think it would depend if the sc3tog through the back loop would create a small ridge that you don't like, visually.

what i mean is... your row is moving along fine, all is even, then you come to the corner and there is a small ridge for three stitches. does that look bad to you? if it's not pretty to your eyes, then i would do it through the front loop only.

i hope that made sense

Makes sense..

I see no ridge so it seems fine but I still have not mastered the mitered square yet (only did one). I kind of tightened up halfway through and got a trapezoid! I'm going to try again trying to loosen up the sc3tog (tip they gave if your square does not come out square). Other than that, it does seem okay with no ridge. Definitely makes a definitive front and back of square doing it in the back loops of each corner, each row. I wonder if I alternate if it would make the square look the same RS and WS? Seems good enough to me. This is a sampler blanket. I'm learning new stitches and technique, most of which I'm learning what I'll never do... mitered squares! Chat Icon

Thanks for you help! Chat Icon

In case you didn't figure it out... I'm working on the project from this post. So you can check out each square as we each do them! Or wait until December to see the finished products! Chat Icon
