not when you're TTC. Just when you're pregnant I was told. I still use the same face wash then changed when I was prego the last time.

Re: Are there certain meds in face cleansers you should stay away from when TTC/preg.?
The only acne medicine that is STRICTLY forbidden when TTC and PG is acutane (which is not OTC anyway).
Otherwise, every OB will tell you something different. My OB said topical acne face wash is fine, no matter what's in it. I've heard not to use things with Retin or moisturizers with salicylic acid where you don't wash them off, but that's only after you're PG.
I've had the most success lately with a bar of dial for face wash. But nothing is really stopping the pizza face.

Re: Are there certain meds in face cleansers you should stay away from when TTC/preg.?
I think for the most part all of the OTC stuff should be OK.
You could ask your dr once you become pregnant. I don't think any of them are bad for when you are TTC.
After my mc my skin got REALLY REALLY bad and the derm put me on stuff. I can't be on anything with benzoil peroxide because I'm allergic to it now (thanks to proactiv) so he put me on a gel a lotion and a pill. I had to stop taking the pill once I got a BFP but I was OK to take it while TTC.
A lot of face stuff is class A or B... so that's good.
You can google medications to see what level they classify as to know if they are safe.
I'm going to dig a little and try to find that link for you. I'll post it when I find it.
ETA links:
safe fetus.com enter name of med ...
FDA description of catergories
Def look at the safe fetus site.... you out in the med you are searching for and it tells you the info on it. skin meds are listed... such as oxy clean, etc.

stay away from acutane
They wouldn't even give you a prescription for accutane. You have to use 2 forms of birth control and your doctor has to register you in order to get specific stickers to put on your prescription. You also have to go for monthly blood tests and sign a bunch of waivers. You even have to sign that you will use TWO forms of birth control and they make sure you are on the pill for one of the forms. The other form they want a condom. It's mandatory.
The package comes with a picture of a pregnant woman on it with a big x over it.... there's an amazing amount of warnings that you cannot be on it if you are TTC or are pregnant.
Also, there are a few law suits with accutane and I think it may have even been pulled from the market now because it's causing chrone's disease, and other problems.
So I wouldn't even be worried about this med since there's no chance you will even come across it.

I didn't change anything when I was pregnant. I was using Pro-Activ at the time and I continued all through my pregnancy with it because the hormones were just destroying my skin and my DD was born healthy.

It is insane. I've been on it twice.... years ago. The blood test is to test your liver and also the triglicerides (that's the fat content in your blood). You had to have this done once a month in order to get the prescription sticker so the dr could give you the prescription. It's HIGHLY HIGHLY regulated!!!
The thing is, when you have cystic acne and you aren't even thinking about a baby anytime in the near future... and this is seriously the ONLY thing that works and is guaranteed to work... you are at a point where you will try anything!!!
This was also the one medication where I actually FELT a good amount of the side affects. Such as dry lips... my lips were so dry that if I smiled they would crack open and bleed. So you had to use serious medicated lip stuff (I used aquapor - I forget what it's called exactly, but it was a gel that wasn't even for your lips but worked fantastic on them).
One side effect is depression and supposidly suicide... I didn't feel that at all though. And the depression and suicide was never proved to be from accutane because a lot of the people who would qualify for accutane are usually depressed from a lifetime of other ailments.

i used proactiv throughout my entire pregnancy with no problem, and my OB had no problem. Do your homework, and do what feels right for you. You're going to get all sorts of different opinions from different docs, nurses, etc. on this topic, with the exception of accutane, it's pretty divided on what to do.

Re: Are there certain meds in face cleansers you should stay away from when TTC/preg.?
I was more concerned about OTC meds because I've stopped all my topical prescription meds. I assumed you should stop prescription meds when TTC because when you become pregnant, you won't know for at least 2 weeks. Am I just being over cautious? I guess like the pp said, I should do what feels right for me

safe fetus.com lists OTC and rx meds. I'd check out the mediction on that list then made an educated decision from there....

Re: Are there certain meds in face cleansers you should stay away from when TTC/preg.?
When you are pg your OB will tell you what they think. Some are against using Benzoyl Peroxide, some are against using salicylic acid. Several months before I started to TTC for #1 I stopped using all my rx acne meds (Duac, Doryx and Retin-A). My derm put me on pregnancy friendlier meds (Erythromycin gel and Azalex). I don't think that OTC face cleansers are strong enough to really worry about when you are just TTC.

click me
I just did a search. The Elizabeth Arden website doesn't seem to list the ingredients, but this site does... You just have to find the exact Elizabeth Arden product then click on the Ingredients tab.
I found this pause and effect moisturizing lotion... but IDK the specific products you use.

Some OTC stuff, well most, have Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid... so if your doc is against those things and you want to follow him, then I assume that covers the OTC products as well.
I was on Doryx, and my RE told me to stop taking it once I got pregnant.
