NTTCR but MIL/Granchild related

morning everyone!

i just found out that my MIL is currently making her wedding gown into 2 christening outfits (one for me/DH, one for BIL/SIL) because she wants us to have something to remember her by. but she never mentioned it to me, DH or the BIL... she asked my mom for a family heirloom to be included with the outfit and my mom is the one who told me about this in confidence.

my DH and i think it's a weird gift/surprise to give to someone considering we don't have any children yet and neither does BIL. none of us are even pregnant! and i already planned on making my wedding gown into a christening outfit for our kids. BIL doesnt even know if he wants kids or if he will even christen them.

my DH said we don't have to use it just cause she makes it, and i agree. it's something that she should check with us first. and i really hope she doesn't give this to us soon because i dont want to have it in our house. i feel like it could be a bad omen or jinx things since we're TTC.

what do you ladies think about this??

I think it is a very nice gesture. Personally it wouldn't bother me but that is me. I am sure other people feel differently. Maybe she should have talked to you guys or maybe she thought it would be a nice surprise. Either way it sounds like she had good intentions. I would just talk to her about it.

Well, I do think it's a sweet gesture but on the flip side (speaking as a mom) I kind of get annoyed when people take it upon themselves to make the decision as to what my DD will be wearing on big occasions. It's sounds silly but it's a big deal to pick out the christening outfit or the special dress for Xmas or her first bday outfit and it's something I look forward to. For my DD's first Xmas my aunt bought her a dress (which was cute but not what I would've picked out) and then this past Easter my Grandmother bought her an Easter dress, again, cute but not at all what I would've chosen.

I understand wanting to choose your own outfit or wanting to use your gown to make a christening dress and you should do what makes you happy. That being said, graciously accept the gift that your MIL is giving you (which is very sweet) and then you can always deal with the other stuff later. Maybe you can agree on having professional pics done with the outfit she gives you and then use whatever you pick out for the actual christening day. Good luck!!!

thanks! we both realize that is a very sweet gesture and i know she's putting thought into this and her intentions are good... but at the same time, we just don't think its something to do without discussing it with us first. MIL even told my mom that her feelings won't be hurt if the outfits don't go to use but it's just something she wants to do.

guess we will cross the bridge when we actually get to it (hopefully sooner than later!). and i did think that we could take pics with the outfit on so at least MIL will have pictures of it.
