Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

My son is now in the Cub Scouts. Their fundraiser is selling popcorn. This is extremely hard because nobody wants to buy it because it's so expensive! Chat Icon Even I don't want to. At least the Girl Scouts sell more affordable, delicious cookies, or sports teams sell candy bars. But, popcorn??? I wish they had a better thing to sell. On top of nobody wanting to buy any, even with it being sold online, the "older" boys have already taken over all of the selling which leaves nobody for my son to sell it to. He's 6 and these other kids are around 12 I guess. They race to see who can sell the most so they can win the best prizes. My poor son is so nervous selling it that he can only get out, "want to buy some popcorn?" Poor thing.... we tried to help him on what to say, but this is so new to him and being only 6, it's hard. Heck, it's hard for me to do with him! Chat Icon Now, he feels bad when he doesn't sell anything. Chat Icon I hate these fundraisers. At least have a better product!!!

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

I wish they would officially let you sell the individual packets for $1 each. Most people have no problem giving a couple of dollars.

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

Yeah, we were in the mall this weekend and I saw the smallest bag was $9.

If I didn't have 2 other things I just spent money on (besides the nut money I owe for g.s.), I might have bought it but to me, that is a little much.

I agree - $9 was the least expensive item they had! (I had to buy some from my neighbor).

It's not "mandatory", but the Pack needs the money to operate (belt loops, patches, awards, activities, etc)

BTW, the chocolate ones are YUMMY! Too bad it's $20, though....

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

A cub scout two houses down from us came around a couple of weeks ago selling. They just moved into the neighborhood, so it was nice to meet the mom and her kids. (Our neighborhood doesn't have many kids).

I bought a bag from him, he asked so nicely!

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

Totally crashing, but I bought a box outside the supermarket last week. (more because DH was a boyscout his entire childhood, so I have to pay homage).
Anyway, when they told me it was $18 for the box, my eyes must have done this Chat Icon because the scout said to me, "Don't worry, you can just give me a $20 and I'll give you $2 back"!

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

DS is new to Cub Scouts this year too, they made a huge deal of the prizes at the pack meeting - a MARSHMELLOW SHOOTER, complete with the leaders shooting marshmellows across the the cafeteria. Of course my son and the rest of the boys are dying for one, but they have to sell $600 worth of popcorn to get it...my jaw dropped! Crazy!!! It is expensive stuff

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

My neighbor's sons are in the boy scouts and I almost fainted when I saw the prices. I bought the $9 bag because we're so close with the neighbors. I don't understand how they expect these kids to be able to sell popcorn that expensive

They did the same thing here. Fortunately, you can get a marshmellow shooter (gun not bow and arrow) at Kohl's, etc. for $19.99. Chat Icon A lot cheaper if you ask me? Chat Icon

Re: Cub Scouts - Selling Popcorn

I just said the same thing to a friend this morning! Thank goodness we can buy one (or something similar) from the store - to get any prize you have to sell $250!
My SIL asked why he wasn't selling cookies, I broke the news to her that only girl scouts sold cookies, and boy scouts sold popcorn - she was disappointed Chat Icon

Crashing....Chat Icon

I was Chat Icon when I heard a box of microwave popcorn was $18.

One of my students was selling outside the supermarket so I wanted to buy someChat Icon I have to say it's tasty stuff, but in this economy a more reasonably priced item might be a better idea.

I'm not saying it isn't done that way Chat Icon It's just not *officially* allowed. The individual bags are actually labeled "not for individual sale".

Which makes no sense to me, from a fundraising point of view.....
