Child care/day care costs

Is anyone else who is TTC or planning to start TTC in the near future terrified by the cost of day care/ child care???
I know it al finds a way to work out... but I can't picture that additional expense.
Then again, I could not imagine handling house expenses when we bought the house and that worked out just fine!

Any words of wisdom?!

We are not planning to use a daycare because it is just too much money for us. Thankfully my parents will be able to watch our LO while we work.

As for the daycares aren't there certain ones with a sliding scale? It will all work out. I know it can be very stressful thinking about the costs.

meee.. i have to put our LO in daycare.. i was thinking of getting a nanny but they are just as expensive.. i can use my in-laws and parents once in a while, but i would never expect them to watch our LO. Hoping when the time comes we will find a way.. Chat Icon

Re: Child care/day care costs

I think here (west coast) its about $200 a week per child. I might be off a bit. I'm basing this on what my boss pays. He pays $340 for 2 so, I'm guessing here.

IDK what we are going to do when the time comes. We are not activly trying yet, will be in Nov. if all goes to plan.

My parents still live in NY and DH parents are deceased so day care is my only option besides a nanny. I think I might go that route tho.

Re: Child care/day care costs

childcare here at my job is discounted for coworkers and it is about 1K a month FT. So i would estimate anywhere from 800-1200K average. One of the reasons we stopped TTC between that and all the other costs involved it would be unable to pay our mortgage and bills.

How much is a nanny anyway? I am not sure if I would be able to leave my house in the morning with someone still in it!! Unless it was someone I knew.

Re: Child care/day care costs

When I worked in daycare about 8 years ago the cost for 1-9 months was 900 per month and as the baby got older the price went down a very small amount. I am sure that number has increased by now. So I would estimate about 1000+ per month. We are lucky because my mil is going to watch LO thank god. I would def check into a nanny though you might find someone for much cheaper and your baby would get one on one time. If you decide to go with a day care make sure the staff to child ratio is what the state suggests. Many places don't follow the guidelines and just put as many babies as possible into one class to make more money.

im so torn over this...is this something you would want to be the "cheapest??" obv, if you need day care, you need to work, so $$ isn't free flowing, but on the other hand, do you want just anyone to watch your LO.

I have been looking into Montessori Schools (which start when DC is around 2) and before that my sister and hopefully MIL will watch LO, I also want LO to be in a day care setting at least once a week.

i work 2 days a week and ds is in daycare those days ---- i pay 600 a month.

once baby #2 comes along it will be about 1200 - really not worth working bc even though i pay for 2 full days i only work 1.5 days and if i were to call in sick or something happens that i cant work that day i dont get paid.

Somehow it will work out.

my friend paid her nanny $12/hour. that nanny quit because she wasn't getting enough hours. then she hired another girl for $10/hour.

a lot of girls i work with drop their children off at small day cares (no more than 5 kids) run out of private homes. this i would only do if the person comes highly recommended by sources you trust. they usually pay around $50/day.
