Apples and oranges unfortunately. So you can get a great big house up there for 350k.
It's also Buffalo and not New York.

It is apples and oranges.....I could move upstate or down south but I wouldn't take my NY salary with me so I probably wouldn't be able to afford a big house there.

ITA.. and also its the aspect (for us anyway) to be close to our families.

Hi,
just to let you know, i live in an area of Westbury called Salisbury. I love the area. My taxes are 8400 but my house has been dormered. If you search mls, put in Westbury with east meadow schools. you will see affordable homes, but the cheaper ones are major fixer-uppers if you are up to it! most of the homes are levits also. hope that helps a bit! we are seriously living in an LI invasion down here(south charlotte)
i can't throw a stone without hitting someone from LI.
Every single day at the park, a new person from LI. Today a new transplant and her son came into josh's class for information.
This morning during our walk, I was talking to an older guy who moved from LI walking his dog.
I wish I could trade some in and get some staten islanders! they don't have as many landfill jokes!
You might not be able to bring your salary down, although many do, but my school is EXCELLENT, my town is so safe, we are in a brand new townhouse for 140K...3 bedroom with garage. Hardwood and granite. Neighborhood gym and huge pool with 3 story water slide. walking trails...Even the pizza is good they are from staten island.
The best is, we all get the same loan!
USDA, no money down, no PMI!
just throwing it out there...outside of the NY bubble, things are different.

Living outside of NY you can definitely get more but there are some things NY has to offer that is pricesless. Most people (I know)move away not because they dont love it but because they CANT afford to live here.

true..most come down to be sahms and can't swing that up there.

I agree--I would take the smaller house in Huntington any day.
I went to college in Buffalo for one semester and ran the h*ll out of there!!!!

Yeah-commutes are tough in NY. In charleston I was home in minutes.

look in areas with a lot of commercial industry to support the schools.
a town like bay shore, which has a mall and a downtown sector as well as all the industry on sunrise highway leaves less of the tax burden to homeowners than say west islip, which is small, mostly residential and otherwise filled up with tax exempt medical offices affiliated with the catholic hospital. bay shore gets tons of funding, so they have lower taxes and plenty of money for programs. west islip's budget is cut to the bone while the taxes are sky-high, so affluent population or not, the kids aren't getting much for your dollar there.
same comparison between hauppauge and commack.

eh..it is industry specific, of course, but overall, salaries are not so much higher downstate than upstate that they make up for the ridiculous cost of living here.

this area is unique and great in many ways, but I think there is a mindset on Long Island that it is the BEST place in the world to live and everywhere else pales in comparison. There are many wonderful, beautiful areas to live in the U.S. and in NYS. There are priceless features about many areas. Most people I know who stay here and don't want to are here because of family (myself included), not because it is such an amazing place to live.

i'd rather be in northern california. i stay for family & because i am in the highest paying market in the country for my field. the cost of living in cali isn't much better than NY. tho i would miss ocean beaches warm enough to swim in and NYC if i left. the reality is that it's expensive to live here because it's a pretty nice place to live therefore there's demand & competition from people who are willing to pay.
ETA: my friend just posted this from the onion on facebook, and it made me think of this thread, lol.

I think its a mindset for anywhere..as there are those who have the mindset that LI is the best place to live (I dont necessarily agree it is for us but I am here so instead of making myself miserable I make the best of it). There are those living in the south, caribbean etc who would argue the same (and do) that they live in the best place. Everywhere has pros/cons. But the site is LIfamilies so I think its natural to find many people on here would most likely feel it is the best place for them.

If I moved out of state I wouldn't make anywhere near what I make here, so I fee like it would be the same thing?
I think the rest of the country think we are making these phenomenal salaries but really we are making enough to pay our mortgage and taxes...
