Carpet vs Tile?

hi Guys,
Maybe you can answer a question before I waste lots of time shopping. Which is cheaper to buy/install per sq ft? We currently have carpet which is in desperate need of replacing. It is off the den by the back door, so between, kids/dogs and mud it gets pretty trashed. I mentioned to my husband that we should tile the den, he thought I was crazy as it would be much more expensive. Is it that much more for tile?

tile CAN be pricey, but it can also be reasonable. shop around prices for tile and you can find some really good deals. we happened to fall in love with tiles that were on a weekly special at home depot and got a great deal! then youll need grout, and cement slabs to go under and all that stuff. if that room has alot of kid/pet traffic, you are def better off with tile IMO. you can always do area rugs if you want too. tile will last for a very long time, where carpet will at best only make it 8-10 years, maybe..

Carpet will be cheaper, but like PP said, it won't last very long. Especially if it's a mud tracking area. You will have to be steam cleaning that every week, and it still won't last that long, I don't think. The tile will cost more up-front, but in the long run, will probably be cheaper and look nicer.
