Tales from a BTDT TTCer
Hey ladies! I have been thinking about doing a post like this since I got my BFP and haven't gotten around to it until now. I hope it helps someone along while TTC and get their BFP as soon as possible.
DH and I were TTC since Dec 2009. I got my BFP in July 2010. I wasn't using birth control pills prior to TTC so we just stopped using protection and went for it. For the first two months we were totally winging it, not keeping track of when my periods were or anything. Then, I got on this site and I started to learn very quickly.
First off, Google is your friend. There is a lot of information available out there. Learn about your body and what is happening during your cycle. I went out and bought Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I read it and it completely blew my mind at how little I knew about what was going on with my own body. I highly recommend this book.
I then got a basal thermometer and signed up for FertilityFriend.com. Temping isn't easy and it isn't for everyone. However, I is the best way to confirm that you have Oed. And as you now know, from all you research and reading, you must O in order to get pregnant. I started keeping track of my cycles and learned that my cycles were varied and sometimes long (33-47 days) and that I had very little CM. Because I have very little CM and temps only help you to confirm ovulation (which at the point when the temp has risen, it's too late to ), I was still having a hard time with timing intercourse correctly. So, I gave in and started to use OPKs
The first month when I started them, I used the line tests, the ones that you have to limit your liquid intake and test in the afternoon. I never got a positive that month. So, the next month I bought the CBE OPKs ( the ones) That month, I got my on CD 24. We didn't have any success that month but I was thrilled that I got a + OPK, that my temps confirmed O and that my LP was decent (12 days).
The next month I figured I would O around the same time so we for the couple of days before CD24 in anticipation of a . And nothing. CD25, 26, 27, 28, NOTHING. I continued to temp, check my CM and use the OPKs. FINALLY, on CD34 I got my . And two weeks later, I got my BFP! I want those of you who have longer cycles, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are not going to O or that there is something wrong with your cycle. I know I worried for months if there was something wrong with me because me cycles were so long and wacky. I put off going to the doctor because I was afraid of what they would tell me. Thankfully, in my situation, there was no reason for me to seek medical intervention. Sometimes when someone has a longer cycle, there is certainly a reason to speak to a doctor and I don't mean to deter anyone from getting the medical attention they need. I just want to reassure those who might have wacky cycles like me, that it doesn't necessarily mean the worst.
Also, please try to keep in mind that there are many things that can affect when you are going to ovulate. Stress, work, sickness, travel, worrying if you are going to O or not - these can all affect when you are going to O.
The best piece of advice that I can give you is once you confirm O, forget about TTC. Take some solace in knowing that whatever you could have done, you did and there is nothing you can do to change the outcome at this point. Enjoy not having to use OPKs or temp or force your DH to in the middle of the night.
I got my BFP at 10DPO with a FRER and it was a quick, clear positive. I also tested at 13 DPO with a dollar test at didn't get a + so just realize that the dollar store tests are much less sensitive. I know the FRERs are expensive and if you are a POAS addict then certainly stick to the dollar tests. Just know, that if I was only testing with dollar tests I wouldn't have found out until days later. Also, if you get a positive test, and it's a positive, not a evaporation line, you're PREGNANT! (assuming you are not on any kind of meds) Even if it's very light, even if it's very early. Home pregnancy tests rarely, if ever, give false positives unless the test is defective. If you are getting a positive test result, it means there is a detectable amount of HCG (the pregnancy hormone) in your body.
Catch your breath, tell your DH and hang on for the ride that is pregnancy!
I hope this was informational and helpful. Best of luck and babydust to all of you!
