CowHarbor Training Run Q

Yesterday, we were driving back the stacks and noticed probably a hundred people training for the run. Great, right? BUT they were all running on the RIGHT side of the road, WITH traffic.

Anyone care to tell me WHY they were running with traffic? Chat Icon We were in a line of cars following a person towing a boat and we could tell they were jutst focusing on trying NOT to hit one.

I've never trained for CH but as a runner, my first issue is safety before anything else. These aren't the widest and straightest and flattest of streets. Chat Icon

You should always run FACING on coming traffic (left hand side of the road). If that was a big training group, at least one person should have known better. It is dangerous having the cars coming at you from behind because you can not see them and if god forbid you need to get out of the way, there is absolutely no way you would be able to.

Thank you! The thing is that there had to be about a 100 people and they stretched out for about 2 miles of road (the old cemetary all the way to 25A).

To me, it just seemed soooo dangerous but maybe there was a *reason*? Chat Icon

I was there (and have done the runs many times), and while yes it's true that you should run on the left side of the road, some of the roads in Northport are very curvy and the pace group leader will have people go onto the right side to avoid blind curves. (going down Scudder is safer on the right as is Eaton's Neck Road - b/c that's where the sidewalks are)

Safety is a big concern for NRC, that is why there are no headphones allowed and you must listen to your pace leader (some groups have 2). We do try to stay on sidewalks when possible, but that's not always an option. The runners will also yell out that a car is coming behind or from in front to warn the other runners.)

There were maybe 100-200 (tops) people there, but it's broken into 10 pace groups, so there really shouldn't have been more than 20 people in a spot at a time.

Okay that I understand but why didn't they move over when they got to Waterside (which is pretty straight)?Once people got to Waterside and Norwood, heading towards 25A, they were STILL running on the road, with traffic and some were even running side by side.

Listen, I've never run the course, never have done the training runs, so maybe there is a method to this, I don't know. But as a runner and as an outsider, I just wasn't seeing how this was safe at all. Chat Icon

Absolutely! It baffles me when I see someone running with traffic! I think my DH does it though....

Re: CowHarbor Training Run Q

It's definitely the turns. The turns on some of the roads lead to blind spots so some of the runners will run with traffic at certain spots.

I think what happens on Waterside is that

1. people cross over to get to Pumpernickle's and the people behind them see it and start crossing over early and it's a chain reaction. Although there is a sidewalk on the right side as well, I try to stay on the left until I can see the light for 25A.

or

2. people don't hear to get over to the left from the Eaton's Neck turn. (they should know though)

Here is from NRC:

Safety!!!!

Safety is our highest concern! The roads we will be running on are OPEN TO TRAFFIC. Pace groups will be required to stop as necessary for traffic and lights. Run with the same caution as you would on any other training run on open roads. To ensure safety we STRONGLY recommend that you stay together as a group. Follow your group leader’s suggestion on the side of the road to be used. Generally always run facing traffic unless there is a situation where visibility is increased by running with traffic. Utilize sidewalks where possible in areas where the road is narrow. Please do not split from your group and use both sides of the road. This increases the risk to runners, pedestrians and persons in vehicles. We are guests of the community and do not want to jeopardize our program for the future. USE OF HEADPHONES IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN - Walkmans, IPODS, etc)!!!! This is for your own safety, as well as the safety of all around you. If you must runs with headphones, please do not join our training group.
