How important are appliances?

When shopping for a home, how important are nice, updated appliances?

Keep in mind, the kitchen said appliances are in is not updated.

I think it can only help. If the kitchen is not updated, but in good shape, and has nice, new stainless steel appliances, a buyer might be satisfied with that. The new appliances will help the kitchen appear updated. If the kitchen really needs to be gutted, a buyer will probably factor in that they won't need to include appliances in the reno cost.

We spent $3000 on all new appliances once we moved in. Wouldn't be a deal breaker for me

Nice but not a deal breaker, we just bought - they had a brand new stainless oven but an old refrigerator - we decided to the replace the fridge anyway...

Wouldn't be a deal breaker for us at all! We rent now, and we have a mini stove so ANYTHING would be better then what we have LOL

i would probably want to buy my own new appliances anyway but it seems on all these house hunting shows that this is what people look for

Could be a negative. If I have brand-new appliances in the "wrong" color/style, I'm not sure if I'd want to replace them, which would affect my plans for the kitchen. However, if they aren't that nice, I would have no problems getting rid of them so I could redo the kitchen the way I want.

The house I just bought has old appliances. We just budgeted to buy all new ones when we moved in. New or old appliances meant nothing to me when looking for a house. Other things where way more important.

i said no but everything needs to be replaced in our house. I think it really depends on how much you are spending on the house.

it wouldnt be a deal breaker for me at all... however, keep in mind -- if you buy appliances that are engery savers, you get more $$ back at the end of the year in taxes AND a lot of companies have rebate specials (like national grid)

I replied "nice but not a deal breaker".

But I will say that some buyers will start adding up all those little things in their head when they see a house and think how much they will have to spend in addition to the house to remodel.

If I were to sell my house, I would buy stainless steel appliances (I did not say Viking or Subzero!) because I know buyers will say "oh... stainless steel. That's good!".

it only matter to us when looking if the kitchen was re-done, in the sense that we wouldn't be throwing away perfectly good appliances. otherwise they didn't matter.

not a dealbreaker....we bought new...

we sold the appliances that came in the house (a stove, micro and dishwasher) at our garage sale - they were about 5 years old but good kitchenaid appliances - but they were black and we wanted stainless and also they were filthy gross...i mean disgusting...i sold them "as is" dirt and all...

That's why it's not always good to buy for the next owner. If I saw SS, I would think, crap, I really don't want SS, but now I'm stuck with it, and they are brand-new so I'd hate to replace them.... However, if YOU like SS, and you buy it for yourself, and you happen to sell it, that's different.

i'd have to agree... SS is one of those things that not everyone likes

i know DH and i did not want SS AT ALL! i actually hate the look of them

I am talking about the general concensus about what buyers are looking for.

Granite counter top
SS appliances
new bathrooms
Neutral color paint
Crown molding
Wood floors
Fireplace

This is one reason we expanded our house, and didn't want to buy a new one...
We definitely don't want granite counter tops
SS is iffy at this point
I want to do the bathrooms myself
I hate neutral paint.
I only crown molding in some rooms
Minimal wood floors
No fireplace




Then again, I'm not "typical" or even "normal"....
