IVFers Past and Present...
How big of a role do you think does nutrition play in Fertility, especially when cycling for IVF?
Are there certain foods, liquids that you stay away from totally or limit consumption? Do you feel a healthier diet increases your chances significantly? Have you gone organic? Has your doctors stressed this when TTCing or barely mentioned it?
Love to hear everyone's input !
Discuss amongst yourselves oh and to all!

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
my doctor never mentioned anything about it!
i never changed my eating habits while cycling.
the only thing i did after my FET was to eat pineapple core (YUM! )
i still drank my daily cup of coffee during it.. and throughout my pregnancy.

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
Ive been seeing my nutritionist for 6 years now and while my RE never mentioned nutrition my nutritionist said because of my PCOS, I really should cut down on the carbs, increase protein and that would most likely increase my chances at conceiving... dont know if theres much truth to that BUT I personally believe the healthier you are all around, the better it is for IF treatment... so I say def cant hurt this whole process!

See i agree with this 110% which is why im shocked that more doctors do not make this a priority when cycling.
My Dr never even mentioned it, and when i brought it up it all he said was "don't drink alcohol eat, some veggies" and brushed off. Just wanted to know what you ladies were doing as far as a "fertility diet"

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
My mom told me that almonds are VERY nutritious and for me to have a handful of them several times a day. So that's the only thing I changed (besides no alcohol and sushi).

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
My RE is Dr B also, and he didn't mention to me anything about nutrition. But my acupuncturist told me that I need to stay away from cold drinks and raw vegetables and fruit. He said if I'm going to eat a salad to have a cup of herbal tea with it to warm up the stomach. He said no soft drinks, no coffee, basically just room temp water Believe it or not, that's all that I've been drinking for months now But I really don't think that I believe any of this He mentioned that it's good to drink rasberry tea leaf and ginger tea. Oh, and stay away from artificial sweeteners. I also try to eat as much organic food as possible.
I cannot even begin to explain to you how much I miss my cappuccinos and iced lattes

I am not IVFer, but I have made diet changes on advice of my accupuncturist. They are : no milk or any milk related products ( yogurt and all cheeses included), no soy ( i hate it anyway), no sugar ( only organic honey).. hm.. what else? no carbo hydrates. i think the biggest thing for me was yogurt and cheese, but i can totally live w/o those.

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
My last RE said when doing an IVF cycle to eat as if you are already pregnant. Also, the acupuncturist I went to encouraged me to add more protein to my diet and vitamin D.

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
I've seen a few acupuncturists. They agree on warm foods, not cold. They don't agree on other things.
One told me red meat is good. The other not good.
I think you should just eat healthy and have anything in moderation. While I believe in eastern medicine I also believe that if you feel good and are taking care of yourself, your body will be healthy.
So eat healthy, exersize and get rest. It's so confusing trying to figure everything out.
I've made some changes I think will work. I've increased antioxidents, decreased alcohol and caffeine and have lost some weight through ww which I think will definitely help.

Re: IVFers Past and Present...
This is what I have changed:
Related to PCOS--follow a low GI diet and do not eat ANY artifical sweetners, at all.
Related to improving my body/egg quality: Organic fruits, veggies, dairy, meats, and everything I buy is either organic or 100% natural, no high fructose corn syrup, no nitrates. The only time this doesn't apply is if we eat out (which has been cut down to maybe once a week, sometimes less) and if we are at someone else's house.
Has any of it helped? No clue...and while I haven't lost much weight from the low GI diet, I don't gain which is progress for me. And I do feel better, overall.

This is a great rule of thumb, thanks.
How does everyone feel about eating FISH? I read an article that stated around 70% of fish comes from the gulf, granted, I have no idea how accurate this # is, but it still got me thinking. I love fish, and usually have it 2-4x a week, but now im worried about eating it at all.
I am also concerned with how honest our gov't is with us regarding how safe our food really is. Food selection is really dwindiling

Fish is controversial. I actually asked about it. It comes down to quality of the fish. If bought at wholefoods or such, the it is very good. The fish that is sold in most places ( imported from China and fed God knows what) not good at all. So I say, if it is not possible to eat good quality fish, I would stay away.

ITA. Salmon is suppossed to be excellent to eat for fertility because of the very high content of omega fatty acids, which is great for egg quality. And try to avoid farmed salmon and fish in general because the mercury levels are much higher, try to stick to wild salmon. And of course we need to pay attention to the levels of mercury in fish. I do eat fish still, wild caught. And even tuna from a can, LOL. Somethings I can't let go of. Usually when I go out I really go crazy and have shellfish or sushi. I figure with all the other radical changes I have made, if there is any benefit is has to outweigh the occasional splurge.
