How would you handle this?
My house is connected to our neighbor's on one side (townhouse). I have consistently noticed that the old woman who lives next door has a grandfather clock that "dings" every half hour. I mean.. EVERY half hour!! Like, middle of the night even!! .. I have no idea how this woman gets peace in her house with that noise every single half hour!
I hear it through the wall and though it has never woken me up and it's not SUPER disturbing, I DO clearly hear it and find it annoying. If it was once a day.. or even once an hour even.. ok .. but EVERY half hour!?!? I have especially noticed it a lot lately since I am pregnant and so fatigued, and have been laying in bed for many hours after work and its honestly been driving me a little nuts..
So, what can I say to this woman? Anything? Some background- we don't really talk to her much. She seems pretty grouchy and has not exactly extended a welcoming hand since we moved here. She has never even talked to me- though she has talked once to my DH. I honestly think this woman must be hard of hearing and doesn't realize how loud and intrusive the noise is- because otherwise how does she sleep at night? It must be SO loud in her house if I hear it through the wall- both upstairs and downstairs!

Honestly I don't think I'd say anything. I grew up with a grandfather clock and it went off every 15 mins 24 hours a day. That's just what they do. I don't think we could have silenced it other than letting it wind down so it would no longer work. When we first got it I was up during the night but after awhile it just fade into the background.

Re: How would you handle this?
do you belong to an HOA?
if so, i would bring it up with them - i know where i live you can't make any loud noises after a certain hour...
if it makes you feel any better it would bother me too

I think you are hearing it even more because it is annoying you. I would let it go for now, it's not an obnoxious noise, just something you prefer not to hear. Try to forget about it and you may ignore it without realizing

Not worth it. If it still bothers you in a few months, then say something.

Re: How would you handle this?
If it's on a shared wall maybe she could move it?
Or maybe bang some pots and pans every 15 minutes and see if she gets the hint??

the difference is your family chose to put it up and easily could have taken it down. she is forced to listen to it whether she likes it or not. it won't fade into the background for her. we had a grandfather clock while i was growing up and it took me a long time to get used to it--i really never did and eventually my parents stopped it from moving
it would be very easy for me, who doesn't have to listen to that noise, to say to try to ignore it. but when you're bothered by a noise, especially one so frequent, you need to do something about it.
talk to your HOA if you have one. if not, have DH friend her if possible (since she's not friendly with you) and after a week or 2 maybe he could mention something.
it's horrible living with a noise you can't control--unfortunately i know all about it

Re: How would you handle this?
i think in attached family housing things like this are par for the course and you have to let somethings go and save your battles for the bigger, louder, more disturbing things.
I dont think you can nit pick every noise that comes from a person with whom you share a wall, its really part of the attached family housing deal. You have to expect to hear them.
I live in a co-op by the way.
