Re: Paver Maintenance
Depending on the size of the area the project is definitely a DIY job. I powerwashed, filled the joints of the pool and bluestone patio two weeks ago and then sealed the bluestone patio last week. In total the project took me about 6 hrs (4 to powerwash and fill joints of pool patio *very large area*, 1 to fill joint of bluestone and 1 to seal bluestone).
1 - Powerwashing is only needed if stone is stained and dirty.
2 -Joint Fillers - polymeric sand (cumbersome and messy - IMO should be left for a pro) - stone dust/pea gravel - quikrite play sand
The joint in the bluestone patio were larger than the joint in the pool patio so I used the pea gravel for the bluestone and play sand for the pool patio (purchased both at HD). Regardless of which product you choose, sweep btwn the joint and then lightly mist with a hose.
3 -Sealer I used H&C Paver Sealer - Natural from Sherwin Williams (although similar products are sold at HD and Lowes). I swept the patio, poured the sealer into a paint tray and using a paint roller and pole extender I rolled the sealer onto the patio. The product applies in a milky white color but then dries to a natural finish.
Although I am happy with the results, I desired a more wet look with the sealer (product is available in a gloss finish) but was worried about the stone becoming slippery when wet.
Not sure how much a pro would charge but total cost for my DYI project was less than $50 (gravel and sand were approx $5 for a 50lb bag, selaer was approx $25 a gallon)
HTH and if you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
