If you have a lot of little jobs to do...
Do you just hire a contractor and they can bring all the people in?
Here is what I want to do: - Sand and refinish existing hardwoods - Pull up tile, put in hardwoods in hallway and kitchen - Replace molding throughout house, add crown molding to LR/DR/Hallways - Replace all doors - Recessed lighting in 2 bedrooms - Replace countertop and shower ledge in master bath - Replace vanity in hall bath
And probably some other little things... Seems like a lot of different vendors to work with!

Re: If you have a lot of little jobs to do...
I would get individual prices from people who do that specific work
and then I would get a few price quotes from LICENSED & INSURED Contractors who can get all of the work done for you
compare prices. sometimes contractors can do it for less because you are doing a bunch of things with them. but sometimes it doesn't work out that well and its actually cheaper to hire everyone yourself but that's more work for you.
Its also a control thing. If you hire for each job you would basically supervise them vs a contractor dealing with them

The contractor and his personal crew can take care of most of those jobs. He'll probably just need to bring in an electrician. For my reno, his crew put in the hardwood floor, laid tile, installed doors, molding, vanity, etc. He just needed to bring the electrician in, since he doesn't have his own on staff.

I'd have a contractor do one of the jobs, see if you like him, and then maybe hire him for everything else.

Re: If you have a lot of little jobs to do...
We had one contracotr do all the odd jobs....and we were happy with him and it was easy to deal with 1 person. For some of the jobs we got the materials/supplies and he did the work.
For the floors....we used someone who just does floors....worth it IMO

Re: If you have a lot of little jobs to do...
We will have enough jobs for a contractor to do. DH and I are NOT handy people and I would rather pay someone to do the jobs right.

For the OP's case, I think I would at least find the electrician separately from the other contractors. My DH would rather pick and choose who does each job but using 1 contractor can also work and we've considered it. My DH is very handy but he knows his limits most of the time.

I'd want someone that specializes in wood floors to handle the first two jobs but depending on the contractor they may be the right person for that too if they do a lot of full additions and have extensive flooring experience.
A contractor could be the way to go if they do a wide variety of renovations and have the tools and skills to handle the range you list. The guy that did our dormer and bathroom renovations did several door replacements, molding and trim work, and since he specializes in bathrooms and kitchens the vanities and countertop would be the sort of thing he does a lot of. The ledge in the shower could be a simple tile repair but if it's damaged because there is moisture getting behind the tiles it could mean you need a lot more extensive repairs and tilework so you'd want to be sure the guy you chose can handle bathrooms and tilework. I'd only go with a licensed electrician for something like the recessed lighting. The previous homeowners put recessed lighting in our upstairs and when we later had insulation guys do some work they said there were definate problems with the way the work had been done. Electric work is definatley something you want done by a pro but a good contractor should know what's required and have electricians he can bring in if he's not licensed to do it himself.

thanks for the replies...
Would you change your decision if the house was 45 mins to an hour away from your current home and you plan to do the work before you move in?
