Why are you having it done? It's not something you *have* to do.

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

There were many people who have had them with out any problems. It is a very personal decision.

may I ask why you are having one? Was there something that lead you or your doctor to believe that you need one?

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

Yes I agree with the other ladies, why are you having it done?

I had one done because my blood tests came back positive for Downs Syndrome and that's why DH and I felt we had to do the Amnio. The results came back normal. It's not a painful procedure but very nerve racking to wait for the results. That for us was the most agonizing part. Bed rest is very important after you have the procedure, you must stay off your feet.

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

I had to have one done and it wasn't that bad. They do it while they are giving you a sono so they can see exactly where they are extracting fluid. I was really nervous and scared as well, but this was something that I need to have done for numerous reasons. i don't know what your case is, but I can tell you that having it done gave me the peace of mind I need to get through a really rough time. If you have any questions please feel free to FM me.

Why not start with blood tests prior to going for the amino? They can tell a lot from the tests and will give you a better idea of risk factors. Also, Dh can go for genetic testing if you are really concerned about that. It's pretty non invasive and that way, you don't have to put the baby at risk.

I don't know who does it but ask your doctor. They should be able to refer you. Most likely, your baby is 100% healthy so you may not need the amino. Have they talked to you about a level 2?

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

I totally agree with the above. I would start with the blood tests and see if there are any other indicators before going for the amnio. I went to Genetic Counseling at Stony Brook Hospital which is where I'm delivering. I would talk to your doctor and see what they suggest.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

I would do the level 2 before anything. All it is, is a sonogram where they look for all these developmental things...like the brain, heart, liver, etc. You also go for a blood test where they check for the likelyhood of things like Tri 13 and 18, Downs, Spina Bifa, and a couple of other things. They should also run a panel to see if you are a carrier of some other things...I don't remember what but they can do that for you and DH.

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

My doctor did my genetic testing. They took about 12 vials of blood and tested for all kinds of things. It took about a week to 10 days for the results to come back. I would definitely start with that. My doctor told me I didn't need an amino (unless I felt strongly for having one) since my genetic tests and 1st tri ultrascreen came back normal.

I will have my AFP blood work done in 2 weeks (usually between 15 - 16 weeks) and then my level 2 in July (20 weeks).

Good luck!

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

There are definitley a lot of steps before you should get an amnio. Start with your ultra screen at 12 weeks. It will be a good ultra-sound and blood test combo. Then you will have an AFP blood test at around 18 weeks, then your level 2 at 18-20 weeks. If the results of all of those come back normal, I don't see why you would/should need to put yourself through an amnio.

I had an amnio with my first (I was 35) and am having another with this pregnancy. For me it will be peace of mind. But it is a personal decision and I remember when I had it the first time I was very nervous, but I knew a ton of woman who had it done with no complications.

Another test to think about is the Ultrascreen which is done around 12 weeks. It is more accurate than the AFP -- and you get a really good picture of the baby.

Re: Need some advice regarding an Amnio

Well, you don't NEED an amnio unless the results would change your mind about going through with the pregnancy. I refused an amnio, because no matter what the results I would go through with my pregnancy.

I thought that at age 35 and over you had to have the amnios done because of your age?

No, you don't have to have an amino done. You always have the right to refuse.
