2nd time homebuyers: If you sold your home first and have no family to live with (but you have kids and pets) where did you stay? Temporary housing?
Regardless of what happens with the house we have an accepted offer on... we are selling our house as we are learning our current house is getting in the way of buying a new one... no one wants to get involved in a contingent offer - in other words we can't go into contract on a new house until we are in contract on the current and we are getting blacklisted for it. If the offer falls through we'll look for something else and when we find what we want at that point, we'll be able to close fast without anything in our way on our end.
However, my parent's who have a large home, have made it pretty clear we cannot stay with them for more than a week and even that's a big hassle. I don't want to get into it on here (sigh), I'm sure their reasons are valid to them. We offered money and everything but got a million reasons why it can't work, some valid, some seemed kind of dumb (i.e. they don't want our cat staying there b/c they have a dog - whatever! and the kids are an issue b/c my mom needs to clean late at night - again whatever!), but we aren't going to force the issue. His parents are not an option either b/c of location and our jobs and space. My sister lives in an apartment - no space. His older brother lives in Pennsylvania so that's out and his younger brother lives with his parents. So there is litterally no one.
Is there NICE temp housing anywhere. By nice I emphasize SAFE, QUIET, etc. Child and pet friendly are imperative.

we stayed with my ILs for 5 weeks. But before we found our new house I was getting worried and told DH I would only stay with his parents for a limited amount of time.
So I went online and started researching apt complexes that accepted pets and would do month to month renting. Its a little more than your regular rent but I felt it would be worth it for us!

Have you looked into Extended Stay hotels? Not sure where you are located but they have a small kitchen. They even take pets (not sure of size and they require a pet deposit).
I am sure you could negociate a better price if you were to stay a much longer time.

Try some of the extended stay hotels like the Marriot Residence Inn, Marriot Town Place Suites or Extended Stay America.

I just wanted to make a comment to say that just be careful with places like this and keep one thing in mind for safety...there are sometimes those convicted of sexual crimes against children staying in these. Someone recently posted that they found a few sexual predators staying in the one near their home. Not saying don't stay in them, Just an FYI.

We were lucky and we had a contigency in our cntract for the house we were buying. it was a 30 days contigency. Luckily we founf a buyer for the house we owned with a day or 2 and went into contract simultaneously on both.
If we sell again...i highly doubt we will be so lucky.

we sold our co-op and then started looking for a house. I'm not going to lie, it was rough. Our options were limited because we have a dog. We rented a 1 bedroom apt with a 6 month lease and ended up staying there exactly 6 months. It wasn't ideal but it worked for us and we really didn't have any other choice.

I think this is in reference to the voucher program for sex offenders to stay in hotels in both Nassau and Suffolk county. If the hotel has someone there using a voucher it must be on record. I aslo read an article recently that only 5% of those eligible are actually able to take part in the program due to lack of funds. You can ask the hotel if they have any staying there if you are concerned. A sex offender could be next door visiting your neighbor for the week and you would never know. As always be aware of your surroundings.

True. But just wanted to address this since the OP was concerned about safety and may not have thought of this.

My brother and his family (wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs) stayed at the Residence Inn in Plainview. They were there about 3 months.

We just sold our first and bought our second home. We have a 19 month old and a 5 year old.
You have plenty of time after you sell- to buy and get into a new home. I believe it can be extended up to 90 days. We closed on the sale of our old home at 11 am last Tuesday, and closed on the new one same day at 3 pm.
I would not move twice. It was just not happening with the kids and all their stuff.
It can be done.
Hood Luck!
