Re: what's your feeling on houses with pools?
I don't want one, DH does. There are just too many little ones in our family (and hopefully our own soon) so I see it as a liability. Our town (oyster bay) has several ones, so I would rather go there for free. DH is a snob and a pool hog If I did get one, I already told DH I want a huge gate and alarms on both fences and doors surrounding the areas.

With a toddler, we absolutely did not want one.
yes- that's my other thought.
DH had a pool so he is not opposed to it... but, he also grew up in Old Westbury, had a sh!tload of land and IMO the pool wasn't maintained nicely at all. Headache from many aspects.
Was just wondering if I was being too uptight. Guess not!
We didn't care either way, but our current house had one when we bought it. We love it. We have a 4 foot chain link fence around it with safety lock gates (you have to push down from 5+feet to unlock) - there is no way that my kids can get in that area. We have a .5 acre, so our yard is still pretty big even with the pool (It's in the back corner out of the way). If you make them safe - they are safe.
As for cost. There is a bit of cost. About $500 to open and close (you could easily do this yourself - not hard, just takes a few hours), about $500 in chemicals (Chlorine and shock) and maybe 100 a month in electricity - it's hard to tell since the a/c is on in the summer - so who knows how much it is to keep the pump going.
We have the pump on a timer - and really that does all the work. We have a robot that constantly cleans the pool - so there is no vacuuming/cleaning.
Now that I have kids who are swimming, we use the pool all the time - almost every day in the summer. Our kids know they can't go in the pool area with their vest on. DS#1 could swim on his own at 3 and hopefully #2 will do that this summer, but with their vests they swim into the deep end and love it all. It also tires them out for a good night sleep.
and when I do my long runs in the summer, I go straight to the pool after 14-20 miles - it's great.
