When I looked it up, my research taught me that any liquid with a meat base is gravy, no matter what color it is.
And any liquid made from vegetables is sauce, no matter what the color is.
That being said, if it's brown - it's gravy, if it's red it's sauce.
(unless you're trying to annoy someone who gets easily worked up about things like this....)

I don't know a single person who calls the red stuff "gravy".
We all call the brown stuff gravy and the red stuff sauce!

In the Italian dialect where my grandmother was from, it was called "gravu".
So, we call it gravy.....

and if you really want to get technical the "red stuff" is also known as salsa.
I would say the closest term I would consider as "gravy" would be sugo di carne. However, that means its a gravy that goes WITH meat not a sauce cooked with meat, like a bolognese.

I called it sauce in front of my mother and she nearly had a heart attack. Thinking way back I remember my grandmother calling it gravy (and my grandfather was straight off the boat Italian). Now I'm just confused.
