Help needed-Couch to 5K
I decided to start the couch to 5K Sunday. I am overweight and I still have 20 to lose from pregnancy (I am 8 weeks PP). The first two days kicked my butt and today, I couldn't make it to the last 10 minutes because my knees started hurting.
I have rheumatoid arthritis and was basically sedendary during pregnancy. Prior, I swam daily and I went to hip hop. I never ran in my life.
What am I doing wrong? Is it possible I am too overweight and it is putting pressure on my knees?
Help!

Re: Help needed-Couch to 5K
It's possible but it also could be the muscles around your knees getting sore. I workout with a trainer I kept swearing I damaged my knees and she would ask me where it hurt and what the pain was like and sure it enough it was muscles. Now about 4 months into working out my knees bother me less and less. I too am overweight and wanting to do couch to 5K. I think you have to listen to you body. There is no rule that says you can't repeat week 1 until you're ready to move on. Don't push yourself too hard and burn out.
Also do you have good running shoes? That is SO important.

Yup-just bought a pair of New Balance.
I wonder if having a c/s is making it harder to get back into the groove.
I got some ideas for stretching from my brother who is a runner, so I am going to try to stretch more. I decided to just swim laps after my failed run today. I will most definitely be repeating week one.

Re: Help needed-Couch to 5K
Honestly, and you can take this with a grain of salt, but at 8 weeks PP, maybe your body just isn't ready. My suggestions would be:
walk 4 days a week for 30 minutes Do some gentle stretching try some exercises that strengthen the knees
And then try the c25k in a month. If you are still feeling the pain, then see a doctor who specializes in bones/joints/muscles.
But also, if it makes you feel any better, the first week IS hard. Give everything time.
And good luck!

Thank you! I have been walking every day for about 30 minutes with DD. I started at 2 weeks PP and built up. That is why I thought I was ready for c25K. Should I still hold off? Or should I increase the walks to more than 30 minutes?
I also started swimming laps again and I am fine with those.

I wish I had an answer for you. One thing to think about is how the walk you have been taking are paced. Are they slow and casual or are you breaking a sweat? If they are nice strolls, then try taking it up a notch. If they are brisk and energetic, maybe increase the duration.
I would just give it a bit more time. I've never had a baby but I do know that it does take its toll on the body. I say give yourself a few more weeks.

I see that you bought a pair of new sneakers. But did you buy just running sneakers or specialized sneakers for your feet.
I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest going to the running sneaker store in Farmingdale. They will analyze your feet and tell you exactly which type of sneaker works best for you. I also had major knee pain before going to them.

ITA. When I started the C25k last I bought a pair of running sneakers based on price & color because I was on a tight budget at the time. BIG MISTAKE. I ended up with the worst shin splints with a week or two! I needed more cushioning in my sneakers. Once I got the RIGHT pair of sneakers all the pain went away.

I third this! I had a really bad pain in my foot during the C25K, and as soon as I got a better pair of sneakers, the pain went away. The Runner's Edge in Farmingdale is awesome!

Mich... I was told not to do any excersise until 12 weeks after my C section. Please ask your OB!

Yeah, I bought New Balance running sneakers.
Where is this store? I will be in NY around Memorial Day, so I think that is worth a shot.

Re: Help needed-Couch to 5K
I agree with the other ladies about the sneakers. That was the first thing I thought of when I read your post. Definitely go to a running store and get fitted for shoes. That can make all the difference.
One other thing- listen to your body. If you are really in pain- stop and walk. I did the c25k last year and there were times I needed to repeat weeks. There's nothing wrong with that. It's more important to build your endurance without hurting yourself! Good luck!
