I wonder what Holmes on Homes would have to say about this

A little history first.

In our upper and lower corner cabinets we always had a draft. I mean on the nights we had that dropped down in the teens and single digits my olive oil would start to solidify. We would feel a draft on the bottom were the upper corner butted up against the left wall cabinet so we put some towel paper to stuff it up and it helped. It also always felt cold in the kitchen despite the heat.
Then we had a pipe burst that was inside our sink cabinet (on outside wall) and another pipe that came unsoddered from the cold (we found that when we took the base cabinets out).

The kitchen was also redone by the previous homeowners in 2002. Clearly the people they hired didn't need know what they were doing.

So, today we take down all the cabinets minus 2 on the opposite wall and this is what we found. We couldn't believe it!!
1.) it is hard to see the arrow is pointing to a shadow. That shadow is actually the outside. I wasn't able to get a good picture. When workers vented the hood to the outide they caulked/sealed around the vent opening so the draft was coming in though there.
2.) picture number 2 shows why we felt the draft. We took the cabinets down and found it like this. The bottom of the soffit had no sheetrockChat Icon And I guess the workers thought that since the cabinets have a top and bottom it wouldn't matter Chat Icon
3.) They ran wire under the cabinets and attached a junction box at the end, then PLUGGED in the dishwasherChat Icon Chat Icon. As if that wasn't bad enough, that was stuffed towards the bottom of the dishwasher and a covered by a plate that attaches to the back of where the opening is. There was also no GFI. I guess they installers knew that if they put a GFI and it tripped it would be a pain to reset it. I hate to think what could have happened if water got back there since it wasn't really grounded like it should have been.

And to think permits are not necessary for straight remodels. Only if you are changing the size.

The GFI issue is very easy to resolve. Just put a GFI circuit breaker in the breaker box. I have GFI breakers for the bathroom circuits.

Of course, if they did that, they would probably have enough intelligence to not do everything else they did... Chat Icon

I believe that Homes on Homes is on Facebook now and you can write to him and ask for his advise. I'm pretty sure I saw a commercial for it the other day.

I think every home owner should have a Holmes on Homes type of person in their home before they buy. But we all know that won't happen. Chat Icon
