FDA and flea/tick treatment?

I heard the other day that the FDA was going to take a position on the flea and tick for pets.

I can't find anything on it.

Does anyone know?

Hmmm...haven't heard. What did you hear? What might they say you think? I know when there was all that debate about that stuff, I spoke with my vet who said they lump all those flea things together, so some get a bad rap when they are fine to use (such as Frontline). Maybe they are going to classify them somehow to alert people of the riskier products?

I don't know. I heard on TV a couple of days ago that the FDA was going to disclose something about it that day.

No idea what it was exactly or what the issue was.

Re: FDA and flea/tick treatment?

Thanks for bringing this up, and posting the link! We continued Frontline for Ginger since that's what she's used to but will have a decision to make in 2 months when she runs out.

The article says to consult your Vet about it but I also wanted to note that not all Veterinarians are experts in the subject of alternative products to spot-on treatments. I had conversations with 2 vets about it and although both had opinions, neither could back them up with specific instances or information. I found that troubling, since I think most people would opt to accept their opinion, no questions asked.

I decided to not completely rely on them, and did additional research myself. It made my head hurt for a while Chat Icon but I feel confident in our decisions now.

The main reason I was asking is because my dogs are almost 4 yo and I have never use a flea/tick med on them.

I inspect them all the time.

But we need to board them in about a month and I feel I will be "forced" to show they are on a program.

I hate that they can lick each other's neck, that DS is close to them. I feel it's not "dangerous". I would have to separate both dogs for 3 days every months.Chat Icon 3 days of hell. They cannot be separated. They will cry all day.Chat Icon

I have 2 dogs. I apply this monthly. My dogs never lick each other's necks, even with the meds on. Do yours?

Also the meds dry up in about 24 hrs the most.

In addition, I have done much research and even though they are chemicals and I am paranoid about my DD and harmful things, I have read and been told these meds really can't harm humans. Is this true? I dont know. But I know that flea bites are way more deadly than most of these products. But sure, every dog may react differently.

We had fleas in my home once growing up and I never want to experience that again. And my male dog picked up fleas 2 times in my neighborhood so I felt forced to use this stuff. And I do use it monthly on both my dogs. I just keep them away from my DD for about 24 hrs, which isn't too hard. And when she gets older, I hope she can understand to n ot touch their necks when it is applied. You can also apply it at night so about 10 hrs will be spent sleeping, and the dogs won't bother with each other (or do they sleep with each other, on each other?) Mine don't so I don't have to worry about that.

If I was boarding my dogs, you better believe this product would be applied b/c there is a GOOD chance your dogs will come home with fleas, which is a living nightmare.
