Re: Spinoff to the bulldog story and how much money it cost
Can you say more about your policy, are there any restrictions at all or certificates you had to provide to get 80% covered?
I know a lot of people with Labs who have had claims denied for joint surgeries (with various companies). I started looking into it long ago but got so confused with all the information, I put it to the side for a while and never went back. Now we just keep savings aside for that purpose, but I should look into it again and find out claim histories and if they pay for typical Lab problems.

Yes look into it!! I was the sameway saving on the side just in case. Otis had to have mouth surgery during thanksgiving this past year set us back almost $800.00 ofcourse we would pay any amount for him. A friend told me about this insurance I looked into it and it sounded perfect. You can go to any vet or specialist and then you just submit your bill and will get your 80% back within 10 days. Check out the website for more details

Re: Spinoff to the bulldog story and how much money it cost
Thanks for the information.
I got in touch with that girl I knew, she has 2 chocolate labs with ACL tears in the same six month period and "PetPlan" insurance denied her claims. It will amount to about $13,000. for both dogs.
She signed up over the phone, specifically asked about the ACL tear exclusion, if there was a waiting period or certificates she had to provide and they said no. Only later when she submitted the claim did they tell her that YES in her state there was a six month waiting period. Because of fraud.
She is in a terrible spot, and this kind of thing makes me nervous. The worst possible time to find out your insurance company sucks is when you need them most.
I have to do extensive homework on this to make sure I can choose a company that doesn't run this way.

Re: Spinoff to the bulldog story and how much money it cost
We got VPI insurance for our dog and have been very happy with it. Many of our friends/coworkers used them so we got some insight beforehand.
We opted to go with the standard plan, without the wellness part. What you pay in to the wellness part we didn't feel we would get enough back from with stuff you just do about once a year, if that (based on the experiences of others)
We paid I think just $150 or so for a year, and we just submit EVERYTHING when we go to the vet and see what they accept/deny. They have been covering a portion of her vet visits and they reimburse 90% on the medication we get her to combat her empty tummy issues. In just three submissions we have probably been reimbursed about half of that $150 so far, if not more... Thank goodness she has been pretty healthy thus far, but seeing what I get back on these "little" things I am happy to know I have it in case of something bigger.
And I believe they DO cover the ACL surgery in all plans.

Re: Spinoff to the bulldog story and how much money it cost
We are looking into pet insurance now, there is a 30 day waiting period so nothing would have been covered for us, but we are signing up April 1st. Either VPI or the one through ASPCA

This is the issue I had. We were all set to sign up for VPI but when I looked at the restrictions for Labs it had said something about not covering certain "breed specific" issues. I emailed them about the hip and elbow dysplasia specifically and they confirmed that they would not cover that type of surgery if Jake ever needed it b/c it is considered to be a "pre-existing lab condition" or something like that.
I have to look into this ins now tho! Thanks for the info!!
