Need Alternatives

I have patellar tendonitis. I've been suffering from it for almost 3 months. This will be my 5th week of PT and it's not healing as fast as I would like it.

My workouts used to consist of running 5 miles 4 days a week and 60 min spin classes 2 days a week and now I'm down to 0 b/c of the discomfort.

What can I do besides eat right to avoid weight gain?

Re: Need Alternatives

well seeing that weight loss is 90% diet I'd just be crazy careful about what you eat.....can you walk rather than running or do the bike.....or yoga?

Re: Need Alternatives

I don't know if you did any upper body work before your injury, but I would definitely try to keep up my arm and abdominal strength with free weights and crunches or other exercises that won't aggravate your tendonitis. They say muscle burns more calories than fat cells do even when your body is at rest!

Re: Need Alternatives

patellar tendonitis is the knee right. can you swim? i heard that is a very good exercise for knee pain. have you tried doing anything low impact. running and spinning are both usually high impact.

Re: Need Alternatives

I don't ever gain weight when I don't exercise. I tend to eat less when not working out. I sometimes loose weight actually.

Re: Need Alternatives

Kim - this sounds like what Matt has. Is your patella not lining up or rubbing inside your knee? I know you are going to PT but make sure you do all the excersizes at home too! Also have you been fitted for shoes or orthodics...they may help correct your feet, which sometimes help your knees! I am sure the dr went over that with you but if not, look into it!

Ok I agree with other girls though, eating right is what helps lose weight and working out helps a little but really it just tons. Can you lift weights? How about the recumbent bike? Walk? Elliptical? Or do they want you to hault all impact activities??

Re: Need Alternatives

Is what you have the same as runner's knee?

I was running 15 miles a week and developed it 2 weeks a ago. i have been going to PT and may get the go ahead in a week or two to start again. So, I just signed up at NYSC. i plan on doing pilates, the elliptical machine and ab classes until I can run again. Also, do some upper body weights. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
