My dog still has his baby teeth

Brooklyn is 15 months and is a yorkie (teacup), not sure if the size and breed play a role. Anyway his big teeth started coming in a long time ago so now he has a double set of teeth.

he lost the majority of his top little teeth and all of the bottom. But still has double fangs. We call them Shark TeethChat Icon

Anyway, is this normal? He has a vet visit in february where we will ask. But just curious if others had this issue. I figured they would be gone by 1 years old.

Re: My dog still has his baby teeth

My puppy is 9 months old. He is a medium size dog, field spaniel, and he has had his grown up teeth for a few months now and all his baby teeth fell out at the same time. I really don't think the size of the dog should matter though. That seems a bit unusual to me. I would check with the breeder (if you got him from a breeder) or the vet.

Have you had your dog spade or neutered yet? I know when we brought Jake to get neutered, the vet checked to make sure he had all of his "big boy" teeth before the surgery. She said that if he didn't that she would have to pull the baby teeth out at the time of surgery.

15 months seems late to me to still have baby teeth. I would def follow up with your vet about it.

Retained milk (baby) teeth are pretty common, but 15 months is pretty old to still have them. Usually, the vet will extract them when the dog is fixed. I would point it out during your next vet visit, and the vet will probably pull out the retained baby teeth.

Re: My dog still has his baby teeth

this happened to my cat. I took him to get neutered and the dr said he still had baby teeth, infact he had double fangs, which somehow DH and I didnt notice.

Well since he was under sedation for the neutering they also removed the baby teeth

Re: My dog still has his baby teeth

Crap, the vet noticed the baby teeth (double teeth) when we took him to get neutered. He made a comment oh I see he still has some baby teeth and I asked if that was normal at this time. He said yes and we made the appt to fix him. This was in Novemeber when he was 1yrs. Guess I have to make an appt to get them extracted.Chat Icon

Atleast at the vet its dental month in February and you get 15% off dental visits.Chat Icon
