When you travel, do you plan out everything ahead of time...
Or do you just wing it when you get there? I think I'm crazy - I am obsessed with planning out every day of my vacation. I'm going to Hawaii in March, and I've made dinner reservations for most nights, planned out which days we're going to do excursions, etc. I do this all the time when I travel. Am I nuts? I think I just want to make sure that we see and do everything that we want to, and not miss anything. Does anyone else do this?

for the most part i do the same thing! i like to plan ahead especially bigger trips that i know i may never go back to or at least not go back 2 for a long time!
u r not nuts!!
i planned or at least knew everything that i wanted to do in hawaii....i did book the luaus in advance and when we got to each hotel on the first day, we booked the excursions that we we had looked into!

I have made excel spreadsheets planning out my vacations. I did that for our honeymoon in Hawaii and our trip to Disney. I like to read everything and know what we want to do before we go, so that there's less discussing it and planning while we're there, and more time to enjoy ourselves.
I love planning vacations!

I love planning vacations and itineraries.
I don't just plan 1 itinerary. I always have contingency plans - Plan A, B, C, and D. I try to be flexible with my travel companions but I like to research ahead of time so I can optimize my travel time. I attempt to block out time to try to experience local life, too.

When we leave the country, we plan more.
We research and print out some stuff if we don't need an advance reservation for an excursion.

I only plan the things that I might miss out on if I don't sign up ahead of time. I usually book any spa treatments ahead of time for this reason.

I do the excel spreadsheet too, and book things that are inflexible date-wise, or need to be reserved in advance.
I keep a list of things that can be fit around that schedule and get to them as time allows.

If I am not going to an AI resort...then I must plan everything -- because I feel like we need to have a plan and make sure we budget money accordingly.
When we were in London in November, I had our itinerary planned out day by day, and saved as a file in my Blackberry.  It included all the places we wanted to visit, the times and days they were open, and the price of each place, and whether they qualified for the Days Out Guide 2for1 deals that I made sure to take advantage of!
DH laughed at me at first when he saw the itinerary -- but came to really appreciate it a great deal, especially when I must have saved us HUNDREDS of pounds by being efficient.

I'm a planner too. I try not to be crazy about it, and I'm pretty good about being flexible if we feel like doing something different than what's planned once we're there, but I can't NOT plan activities in advance and just show up in a place. It causes me stress just thinking about it!

For our trip to Italy will are going to do a lot of planning.
I will not schedule us to the minute though--bc that is why we are going on our own vs. a tour--as much as I want to see things I also am on vacation and like to be leisurely about our activites

One could also argue that by creating such a regimented schedule, you may miss out on things that you might come across while there but didn't know about beforehand.
Generally, I prefer to create a rough daily plan, obviously with some must-see-and-do places, but I try not to make it so tight that it becomes a burden. I mean, it's vacation, I don't want to be stressed out either.

No - unless there's a place I REALLY want to have dinner and I know it's difficult to get a reservation, or DH wants to golf and it's hard to get a tee time .........
other than that, we just wing it. Part of the fun .......
We had ZERO plan in Europe - just a few books to guide us along.
i don't like feeling like I'm on a schedule. EVERY DAY of my life I'm on a schedule - trains, work, daycare, etc etc - I want to go on vaca and FORGET about schedules !!!

We plan to the hour for our trips! Unless it's a relaxation trip to a resort and then we just sit back, take in the sun and enjoy the time away!

Nope. Just the flights and sometimes the hotels. DH and I have in the past, when we were dating, just took a train somewhere and went to the tourist info place and had them book a room for us. We only did that in Europe though.
I once did a full itinerary for a 6 week backpacking trip with my best friend and she laughed in my face when I handed out colour coded itineraries I had typed up. After the weeks, we kind of ditched that and winged it. Since then I don't do it.

nope! I just book it and go
I'll have an idea of what we want to do- but if something better comes along I want to be able to jump on it
most of the time we are just there to relax- we always make friends at the pool or bar and them do things with those people as well....I like to be flexible
