Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
We have woods behind our house and the amount of stray cats is astonishing
The ones that come in my yard are very nasty ...They walk on my loop-loc cover ( which is only 2 years old and was over $2K ) and use it as a scratching post , deficate and urinate in my window wells, taunt my dog ( who is leashed outside to do his business) , and basically stink up my yard...
Usually I love animals, but they are becoming a real menace...
This is probably more of a vent than anything since I really don't know how I can prevent them from coming into my yard..
Anyone else having this issue ?

We are having the same issue. I don't have woods near us but they are all over. They use the safety netting on our trampoline as a scratching post. We had to take apart the trampoline because it was all scratched up.

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
We don't, but I know my IL's in Seaford get them and they go under the back deck sometimes. It's built right over the ground, so FIL is always trying to board up any little spots they can crawl in through. It's kind of impossible though because they get in through the flower/plant beds on the one side of the deck.

You need to contact an organization who will trap and spay them. They will just keep reproducing if someone doesn't step in to help them. This post should be put on the pets board as well.
While I know they are a problem, it is also a problem for them. Finding food, being ill, having litter after litter, not getting medical care, etc. They need someone to step in and help them get under control.

ITA with this.
We have a sump behind us so we get them sometimes. My Mom actually befriends them and then catches them so they can get "fixed". She has kept 2 that were more domesticated and friendly.

totally agree with goobster.
in the meantime, put some mothballs down near the foundation of your house. they don't like the smell of them and will keep away; that will help until they can be rounded up.
call your town animal control office as a starting point to get help.

Ok, so the town animal control office might intervene if we call them ? I don't want them to be euthanized though ...
Theres literally 6+ of them in our yard at any given time !

the town won't do anything about stray cats. We had a problem with them coming into my work building a few years ago. The only thing we could do was round them up and bring them to the town ourselves.

I agree. I have a HUGE stray cat problem and I've looked into EVERY OPTION. Unfortunately, most places want $40 - $65 per cat to come, round them up, spay them and release them. I've tried the ASPCA and the town shelters and I keep getting the run around. It is SOOOOO frustrating - especially when I see a new litter of kittens appear every spring!

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
We have the same problem too, I did try calling a few places, but I would have to trap and catch them which I do not feel comfortable doing.
Everything you described is exactly the issues me and my neighbors have.
I think they are under our deck as well, but i am not 100% sure.
The only think i read online is to cat proof your yard, so they can't get in under the fence, or climb over the fence by putting spikes or chicken wire on top of it.
Other than that, theres not much that can be done

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
The sad (and frustrating) fact of the matter is that to control the problem you must catch them and have them fixed. That stops the cycle from continuing.
I have an IDIOT of a neighbor who insists on feeding stray cats but absolutely does nothing to help control the problem. Instead she just perpetuates it by feeding and not spaying. Every year we had a new batch of poor kittens who grew up to reproduce more kittens or die from the elements. Very cruel.
DH and I had to take it upon ourselves to catch them. It cost alot of $$$$ but was the most humane way to control the problem.

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
If the town won't help take care of it, what about the Department of Health ? It should be a health hazard if they are defecating and urinating all over the place.

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
Do any of your neighbors feed them? They come back to the area when that happens. See if you can contact a rescue organization. Maybe Kara (kittythestray) can help you.

The guy at the end of my block ( the woodcarver ) , his girlfriend I think does feed them, though I'm not 100%...Thius is a never ending problem, there are always tons of kittens around too

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
Many organizations will help you trap/neuter/release (TNR) that way the problem won't keep getting worse. We contacted ALL ABOUT SPAY/NEUTER and they came out and trapped and fixed all our strays. We got low/no cost certificates from Little Shelter and they took care of the rest. They were even able to find homes for some of the kittens who were not yet totally feral. I would contact them.

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
My sister and BIL had this problem. They spent a few months trapping them one by one, taking them to some place out east that spays and neuters for like a 5 dollar donation, then tags their ear. The problem is no longer a problem. It took a while, but they cared enough to do it. Plus, a neighbor kept feeding them and they kept breeding and breeding. In fact, one of the cats adopted them, and he's now living with them. he's the sweetest thing. However, the rest have either died or moved on to other places. No more strays

Re: Anyone else having problem with stray cats ?
Thank you so much for all the replies ..I am definately going to look into all of them !
I have to be honest, I'm a little afraid of some of these cats as far as trying to trap them ( they are pretty ferocious little things )...I'm going to have my DH check into finding something to catch them with !
