Mozzarella Cheese
Do you buy the block or the bag of shredded?
If you do your own shredding, how do you do it?

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
I always buy the block. I shred it using either a box grater or a Microplane.

Both -
I use the cheese grater when I shred myself. The stand-up trapezoid looking thing.

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
I buy the fresh ball and slice, hand shred, or use a big shredder for meals. The only time I buy a shredded bag is for spinach dip cause I don't really taste the difference from the fresh one.

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
normally buy the Polly-o block & shred myself with the mixer attachment or with the hand grater
I have bought pre-shredded in the grocery store and it's always been fine, though I have to say I did not like the big bag I recently got from costco at all! It was a pre-shredded bag, may have been polly-o which is usually very good, but I thought it melted weird, almost a slimy consistancy

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
Usually the block and then shred with the box grater also. Sometimes I will get the pre-shredded for something like baked ziti b/c it needs so much, but I typically look for the ones where the shreds are smaller and not really thick if you know what I mean. The shredded ones that are thick don’t melt as well.

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
Block and cut it in slices. I like LOTS of cheese on my baked ziti, lasagna, etc. and shredding isn't enough for me.

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
The only time I buy the block is for making dip. In which case I'll shred it.
Generally I'll buy either one of the "real" mozzarella cheeses: di bufala and fior di latte. Then I'll shred or slice, depending on the need.

Re: Mozzarella Cheese
Lately, the shredded. I tend to stock up because they are always on sale and I make a lot of pizza and pasta dishes during the week. I also am lazy and don't like to spend the time doing it myself.
