*Can we have a civil debate ???? I really am curious about something.
As I have posted in the past, and hate to admit ... I bought my dog from a pet store! Honestly, my entire life growing up we never bought a puppy. My mother actually was an AKC chihuahua breeder up until I was 18. On a whim, I walked into a pet store and found the love of my life
I must admit, I was TOTALLY ignorant about puppy mills when I purchased Lola. I do know that I may have contributed to something bad which believe me I HATE! However, my thought is ...
Lola needed a home just like any other dog. If she was not sold, wouldnt she end up in a shelter or pound someday?
I would NEVER do this again, I really wouldnt because I understand puppy mills now and that pet store dogs could be very unhealthy! SO, I am not condoning pet stores. But, I feel as long as they exist, those puppies need homes too!
So far, Lola is a healthy, active, adorable young dog. I could NOT imagine my life without her. She brings so much happiness and I honestly feel like she was meant to be mine. My dad is currently battling pancreatic cancer and the only thing that makes me happy is my doggie. She is the best therapy!
Anyway, what are your thoughts on the above question.
Thanks for listening and joining in the *hopefully* friendly debate. Image Attachment(s):

I would NEVER get a dog from a pet store but feel the exact same way about WANTING them because what else will become of them?

Yes, if the dogs arent adopted eventually they would probably end up at a shelter ...BUT...the point is if everyone avoided pet stores - then the pet stores would go out of business and there would be no more puppy mills.
So really --- the only way to end the puppy mills/pet stores is not support their business. Wait until the dog winds up in a shelter and adopt them from there!

Re: *Can we have a civil debate ???? I really am curious about something.
It's of course sad to see the dogs in the stores who need a home, but if people didn't buy they would wind up in shelters where they would hopefully get adopted.
The point is the cycle has to be broken, to save the mother dogs in the mills who are treated like garbage, sittiing in filth, unkept, treated inhumanely, sick, forced to pop out puppies, etc etc. Did you see Oprah's show on Puppy Mills? If not I suggest you do so. When you do, you won't question WHY not to go to the pet store. Just seeing that show opened my eyes to the even worse horrors in mills than i could ever have imagined.
Sometimes for the greater good of all, some have to suffer....that would be the dogs waiting in stores for homes....the cycle has to be broken and this is the best place, b/c the reality is puppy mills and BYBs exist. Part 1 please watch
Part 2 please please watch
Part 3
Part 4

ITA. Plus the money you may end up spending in vet bills from problems from pet store dogs could be overwhelming. I have a friend right now having a really difficult health situation with her pet store dog.

absolutely true. my owen is a "schnoodle" that i'm pretty sure originated in a puppy mill (i can't be sure because he was a stray, but it's my best guess) and early in his life he developed addison's disease. it's very common in inbred (i.e. puppy mill) poodles and schnauzers.
we pay for him to get a steroid tablet every day, as well as an injection every month to keep him alive. obviously it's worth every penny to us... but defnitely be aware that puppy mill dogs have a much greater chance of becoming sick.

Re: *Can we have a civil debate ???? I really am curious about something.
Our dog is from a puppy mill. We bought him in a pet store when I knew better. DH had found a few puppies online in pet stores as a surprise for me. He had never heard of 'puppy mills' before- he grew up in a tiny African village like you see on those "feed starving children" commercials. They don't have much of a demand for designer dogs.
Against my better judgement I went & looked at the puppies. He was already 4 months old and half price because he wasn't selling. DH & I loved him at first sight & before I knew it we were taking him home. He had kennel cough & ear fungus (so far) I can't imagine what type of deplorable puppy mill our purchase funded.
HONESTLY we had no business even walking into a pet store. I would never walk into a pet store again for as long as I live since I know I'm at risk for buy a dog there. We buy our food @ Petco & have no reason to be in puppy mill establishments.
Of course I love my dog like a family member and he is the light of our life. But puppy mills need to be stopped & we cannot buy dogs from them.

While I see your point, the problem is for every puppy bought, the mother has anoter liter, then you are 4,5,6 more puppies...
sometimes, as terrible as this sounds, you need to "sacrafice" one to save many others

Seriously this post is my story right up to the name LOLA!!! the ONLY difference is she is a Maltese.. Thats it.. I did the same thing.. I feel terrible for those dogs too but I still would never ever ever ever buy again in a pet store.. All I think about when I pass a pet store is those poor mommy and daddy's are so abused somewhere.. I really breaks my heart.. I feel more sorry for them than anything.. this is a very sad situation.. I really wish some how it will end someday..

Same here. I can't even go into pet stores anymore because my heart breaks.
To the OP, I don't fault you for getting your dog from the pet store, because you didn't know. I just wish more people learned about the problems with the pet store industry before they got their pets there instead of after.

I got Tiger from a Pet Store too, not knowing anything about Puppy Mills, but would not buy one from there again. But I agree with everything you said. My dog is GREAT. Im sorry your dad is battling Pancreatic Cancer. My mom passed away from it

I got Casey from a pet store before I was truly educated about puppy mills. With that said, i will not buy from a store again YET I do 100% feel like Casey was meant to be for DH and I and we gave her a great life - which may have otherwise been terrible...

My theory is there will always be someone who either doesn't know about puppy mills, believes the lies that pet stores tell them about where the puppy came from or just doesn't care. Someone will always buy that puppy. However the more educated people become the less of a demand there will be. To the people who have purchased from pet stores all you can do now is take the best care you can of your pet and spread the word about puppy mills.

ok so this might be a silly question - but what are considered "pet stores"? Is it buying animals from Petco? or those pet palces where all they do is sell dogs? breeders aren't considered "pet stores" right?
i know this sounds silly, but i am confused!

Me too!! Except my baby is a Yorkie named Bella! Once I walked into that store, I couldn't leave her. Our eyes connected and it was LOVE. I didn't even want a small dog!!
DH and I have already looked into rescue dogs bc we know our next one (or two eventually) will be rescues. We just need to wait until the right time.
I love my Bella and I would not trade her for the world.

Petco doesn't sell animals. (Only hamsters and fish and stuff like that) If you see cats on display in Petco they are from Heart and Soul Animal Rescue and are just there to get exposure and get adopted.
